This 'Severance' Fan Theory Will Make You Question Everything

Why Don't 'Severance' Fans Trust Helly? Jon Pack - Apple

If Severance fans learned anything from episode 2, it’s that we shouldn’t trust anything Lumon tells us. Mark S. (Adam Scott) and his Macrodata Refinement (MDR) team thought that they were heroes after the Overtime Contingency protest allegedly changed how Lumon treated its employees. Now, we know that hardly anything has changed at all. Lumon just convinced everyone to return to work so that Mark S. would keep on chugging away with Cold Harbor—whatever that is!

Still, everything on the severed floor doesn’t feel back to normal. Ms. Huang’s (Sarah Bock) presence opens a new can of worms, Gemma (Dichen Lachman) is nowhere to be found, and one of our own may be hiding a deep secret. When Helly R. (Britt Lower) tells the group what happened to her during the Overtime Contingency in the season 1 finale, she seemingly makes up a bizarre lie. She claims that she woke up at night in her apartment, wearing sweats and watching a gardener work outside. Confused, Irving (John Turturro) asks her: “A night gardener?”

It's possible that Helly is simply too afraid to reveal that she is Jame Eagan’s daughter. It would brand her as the enemy, and her friends may not trust her anymore. Plus, she probably doesn’t fully understand what happened to her either. However, many fans believe that this is not Helly R. on the severed floor. Instead, the MDR team is talking to as an undercover spy: Helena Eagan.

Is Helly back, or is that Helena? Apple

“I suspected she was Helena the whole episode, from the very moment she didn't hug Mark back immediately,” one Reddit user wrote. They theoriser also mentioned that Helly/Helena fumbled with her computer switch, while Helly would have had no problem knowing how to turn the machine on. “It's gonna get SO ugly when the truth comes out,” the Reddit user added.

Another commenter agreed. “Why would Helena let Helly go back to the severed floor when she 1.) has no use for her anymore and 2.) can pretend to be her Innie to find out what the rest of MDR is up to and report back to the board,” they said. Solid points, all around!

Why would Helena replace Helly on the severed floor? Apple

According to one user, Helly’s story may not contain any plot holes. Irving thought it was odd when Helly mentioned a night gardener, but this Reddit commenter claims that the job isn’t so strange.

“A night gardener is not THAT weird. Some people, like myself, actually prefer it,” they wrote. “It is not my main gardening time, but it makes up a small part of my favorite hobby. When it's really hot out, I water at night so my plants have an opportunity to actually have a drink before the water evaporates. I also like to do some light weed pulling when it's not blazing hot out and use that time to gather herbs and vegetables and cut flowers for vases. It is peaceful to garden at night.”

See, folks! Night gardeners are real. Maybe we can’t even trust Irving.
