TikTok is filled with a plethora of food trends — and the latest one to catch my eyes is Pizza Lava Toast. With more than 2 million views and counting, social media users seem to love this tasty trend — but does it really deserve a pizza your heart? I put the trend to the test to see how it measures up IRL — read on for my honest review.

How to make the TikTok-viral Pizza Lava Toast

Pizza Lava Toast is a TikTok-viral food trend that involves making the "ooiest and gooiest filled pizza toast." Sounds good right?

All you need to make it is two slices of bread, some pizza sauce cheese, and the toppings of your choice —in this case, TikToker @kalejunkie (Nicole K. Modic) chose to use pepperoni and Italian seasoning.

Simply place a piece of bread on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet and place four slices of cheese on the border of the bread, leaving the centre empty.

Following this, place another piece of bread on top and then make a small indented hole in the middle by pressing down gently, and filling it with some pizza sauce. Then, cover the top slice with grated mozzarella cheese and the toppings. Nicole opted for pepperoni and Italian seasoning.

You can repeat the steps above if you plan on making more than one Pizza Lava Toast.

Pop it in the oven (at 375°F) for 8 minutes and enjoy.

What people are saying

This dish is a hit onlinde, with hundreds of people saying it "looks so good" and is "easy to make." Others also say you could amp it up by making it in an air fryer.

When it came to offering tips on how to improve the recipe, commenters suggested adding toppings such as chopped peppers on top, as well as using English Muffins, Keto bread or sourdough bread as the base.

Some users said that they had been making their own versions of Pizza Lava Toast for years before the recipe seemingly went viral online. One commenter even referred to the trend as "grilled cheese pizza."

Trying the trend: I made the viral Pizza Lava Toast

I love simple, easy recipes and pizza, so testing out this food trend was a no-brainer.

Following the TikTok video's instructions, I first lined a cookie sheet with parchment paper and preheated the oven to 375°F. Then, I placed the four slices of cheese on a slice of whole wheat bread and placed another piece of bread on top. I only had mozzarella cheese on hand so this is what I used.

Following this step, I pressed down to make a small indented hole in the middle of the top slice of bread and filled it with some pizza sauce. Then, I garnished it with some grated mozzarella cheese, pepperoni and Italian seasoning.

After that, it was time to place it in the oven to cook for 8 minutes.

This is what it looked like when it finished cooking.

I sliced it in half and let it cool for a bit before giving it a taste.

Final verdict: Is the Pizza Lava Toast worth the hype?

The Pizza Lava Toast is indeed ooey, gooey, and super cheesy!

Overall, this recipe is a winner in my books. Not only is it super easy to make (it took me all of 5 minutes to prep and assemble), but it tastes great! I love pizza so this was a fun way to put a spin on one of my favourite foods.

The best part is that I already had most of the ingredients in my kitchen so this is realistically a snack that I can whip up on short notice and enjoy anytime. I also love how customizable this recipe is — instead of using pepperoni or Italian seasoning you can opt to include other popular pizza toppings such as peppers or mushrooms, it's really up to you. Next time I try making it, I might spice it up a little (literally) by using some chili flakes as garnish.

My only critique would be to add a little more pizza sauce on the top slice of bread to make it extra saucy but that might be a personal preference. All in all, this recipe is a 10/10 must-try if you're craving pizza and are in a pinch.
