Sophie Robinson, House Beautiful’s expert colour columnist, is on a mission to inspire us to bring more colour and pattern into our homes – and this time, the spotlight is on country florals.

In our Decorate With Confidence video series, interior designer Sophie offers styling ideas, practical advice and shopping buys to help bring this vintage pattern to life in an easy, accessible and contemporary way.

Although these patterns often conjure up images of old – with rooms decorated in fussy bed valances, pelmets, swags and tails – they’re probably one of the most popular types of fabrics and wallpapers to introduce in your home.

Part of their appeal is the element of nostalgia and the love of mixing in vintage styles. However, design houses have given their prints a modern twist by pulling out their archive designs and recolouring them in new and exciting ways.

Pushing the colour to be a bit cleaner and brighter will also help make your space feel more contemporary. Playing with scale is also key, so don’t be afraid of layering – big florals work beautifully with small ditzy prints.
