Sophie Robinson: 'One of my greatest joys is the art of pattern clashing'

When it comes to bedroom decor, the general advice is to create a tranquil oasis for restful sleep. But for me, it’s not just about feeling sleepy, it’s about embracing a sense of fabulousness. Luckily, I’m a great sleeper: once I lay my head on the pillow I’m instantly whisked away into dreamland. Whether or not sleep is your superpower, you can have lots of fun expressing your love of colour and personality.

I decided that my new bedroom needed a bold focal point with an oversized headboard – a statement piece that would command attention within the room. I collaborated with a local upholsterer to bring my vision to life and we sketched out the desired shape and size to create a template.

The generous scale cried out for vibrant colour and arresting pattern, so I selected a diagonal stripe from my new collection with Harlequin as the hero design within this scheme. I was drawn to the feelgood greens with warmer tones of amber and orange and this palette became the cornerstone within the room, serving as a unifying element for all the other patterns I planned to incorporate.

For pure standout gorgeousness, wallpaper was a must for me. I fell head over heels for the Wonderland Floral design, which is an archive print that we recoloured in my signature vibrant tones for the new Harlequin collection. This uplifting pattern envelops the entire room, playfully echoing the enchanting treetops beyond the window. Drawing inspiration from the colour palette, the vintage bedside tables were given a makeover with a coat of vibrant orange paint, beautifully tying them in with the scheme.

One of my greatest joys is the art of pattern clashing, so in this scheme I fearlessly combined various patterns, from stripes, classic florals and checks to botanical prints and modern geometrics. The key here is keeping them all tied together with a tight colour palette to help ensure a coherent effect.

Remember, your home should reflect your personality, so you can ditch the calming neutrals for a scheme that is bursting with colour and expressive pattern. Embrace the opportunity to create a space that makes you feel your best. Sleep tight and dream big.
