Sotheby’s Is Hosting Its First Sales Exhibition of Men’s Jewelry This Fall

This one is for the fellas! In keeping with the increasingly pervasive trend of men wearing fine jewelry, Sotheby’s is keeping pace with the times by introducing its first sale dedicated to men’s jewelry. “For the Boys: A Jewelry Exhibition” will offer jewelry from the mid-19th century through today with pieces from Bulgari, David Yurman, Cartier, René Boivin, David Webb, Shaun Leane, and more.

While some pieces are ostensibly geared towards gentlemen, such as David Yurman’s sizable signet rings to large and heavy gold and diamond chain bracelets from Chrome Hearts, other pieces up for grabs may also be eyed by women. Take for example a gold and diamond Serpenti necklace or a gold Maltese cross brooch with multi-colored stones from Verdura, which could easily be worn by any gender or, perhaps, shared among a couple.

The idea to create a sale marketed to men came from Frank Everett, Sotheby’s vice chairman of jewelry. He himself is a proponent of wearing brooches—a fashionable statement for tuxedo lapels that has recently hit the mainstream as more male celebrities began embracing the notion on the red carpet. “Since the dawn of time, men have always donned jewelry,” says Everett in a press statement. “However, this renaissance has gained traction as of late thanks to the pursuits of celebrities such as Harry Styles, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell, and others who helped push the modernization of men’s jewelry and the embracing of styles and material that have, oftentimes, been thought of as for women only—those with precious or semi-precious gemstones and generally evoke more personality.” He maintains, however, that he is not trying to “genderize” jewelry, but instead celebrate the evolution of men’s style.

The exhibition will be held from September 23rd through October 5th at Sotheby’s New York and will offer pieces ranging in price from $3,000 to $30,000.
