South Carolina leading rusher Mario Anderson expected to enter portal, report says

After one season, it appears that South Carolina’s Super Mario will bid farewell to the program.

Running back Mario Anderson is expected to enter the transfer portal, On3 reported on Wednesday. He’ll have one year of eligibility as a graduate transfer.

Anderson joined the Gamecocks after playing three seasons at Division II Newberry College. He became the starting running back just four games into the regular season, and earned the nickname “Super Mario” after a couple of big games on the field and for wearing a Super Mario Bros. hat during the Gamecock Walk.

The running back led South Carolina in rushing (by far) in 2023, finishing with 707 yards and three touchdowns, bringing his collegiate career to 4,003 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns. Dakereon Joyner was next on the team with 120 yards on the ground.

Anderson would be the second running back South Carolina loses in the early offseason, after Joyner declared for the NFL Draft three days after the season finale against Clemson. Anderson earlier Wednesday signed with Peterson Sports Management, according to a social media post.

The Gamecocks now have two RBs left on scholarship, Djay Braswell and Juju McDowell, remaining on the roster. Matthew Fuller is the lone commitment at the position for the 2024 recruiting class.
