Spike Lee Rocked Custom Morgenthal Frederics Glasses and a Rolex Daytona to the Knicks Game
Spike Lee has no shortage of attention-grabbing glasses—distinctive eyewear is a signature part of his style, after all—but the specs he’s been rocking most recently are some of the boldest in his collection.
The acclaimed American director, famous for films such as Do the Right Thing, BlacKkKlansman, and Inside Man, has been wearing a custom orange pair by Morgenthal Frederics.

Morgenthal Frederics has been creating bespoke luxury eyewear since 1913, with each one-of-a-kind piece handcrafted by artisans in Germany. Lee has several styles in his collection, ranging from oversized round glasses to brightly colored frames. He tends to favor eyewear made from natural buffalo horn, according to the team. Morgenthal Frederics pioneered the use of this sustainable material in luxury eyewear.
Each pair of horn eyewear is made by hand over hundreds of hours. The artisans meticulously carve, sculpt, and press each pair of frames to perfection. The unique glasses are then fit by expert opticians at one of the 13 Morgenthal Frederics boutiques across the country.
Morgenthal Frederics has spearheaded other innovations in eyewear, too. Glasses in the Chromoclear line, for instance, are fitted with Zeiss BioChrom lenses that may elicit certain biological responses. The yellow “Focus” shades can help with concentration and reaction time to boost productivity, for example.
Lee’s particular specs have clear lenses but bright frames in an orange hue that is one of the colors of his favorite team. The filmmaker continues to be one of the most loyal and outspoken Knicks fans. He wore the glasses to a recent match between the Knicks and Pacers, in fact, with a Rolex on his wrist for even more street cred. The Daytona in question features a 40 mm case in 18-carat yellow gold, a golden dial with black subdials, a black Cerachrom bezel with a tachymetric scale, and a comfy black Oysterflex strap. Lee also has another variation of the watch with a black dial. (Too bad Rolex doesn’t do a Daytona in the Knicks orange.)
As Lee’s specs are custom, the exact style can’t be worn by others. Morgenthal Frederics has a wide range of similar horn glasses, though, including the Lifesaver Round Horn ($2,095), Pei Horn ($2,095), Faulkner Horn ($2,295), and Huxley Horn ($2,295). As for the Daytona, we’ll just assume you already have one.
