It seems as though with every passing day there’s a new ingredient making a splash in the skincare world, claiming to solve everything from irritation to fine lines and wrinkles. Some are more effective than others, but as a woman in her 20’s who’s still experimenting with what works for my skin, I’m always willing to give them a try.

Things that once sounded like science class experiments such as Vitamin C, retinol, and AHA’s and BHA’s have become commonplace (and may already have found a spot on my bathroom vanity), but one ingredient that I’ve been using for years still hasn’t quite blown up in the mainstream.

You may not have heard of squalane oil yet, but once you’ve heard about its many benefits you’ll want to add this affordable oil to your arsenal.

Squalene is an oil that’s naturally found in the human body, but after the age of 30, the amount produced begins to decline dramatically. Plant-derived squalane oil works to replace what the body no longer produces and is an effective moisturizer that hydrates and replenishes skin.

Ideal for all skin types, squalane oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, and leaves behind a non-greasy finish. In addition to helping hydrate skin, squalane also works to soothe irritation and while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with a skin-plumping effect.

As an added bonus, this lightweight oil also works on hair to help prevent breakage and protect against heat styling, as Jonathan Van Ness of Queer Eye can attest to.

Available in pure oil form as well as an ingredient in many eye and face creams, this plant-based ingredient is also a win for me because it’s an affordable alternative to many pricier oils. I use The Ordinary’s 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, which is a steal at just under $8 a bottle and lasts for months.

In warm weather I like to use my squalane oil as a lightweight moisturizer during the day for a glowy finish, and in colder months, I’ll layer it underneath my moisturizer to add an extra boost of hydration to my skin.
