Trekkies are in luck this week as the crossover episode of two popular Star Trek series has been released early.

It has been in the works for some time, but the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks merged episode has dropped sooner than fans expected.

After the episode aired at San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount+ decided to treat all deep space adventurers equally and released the highly anticipated crossover on the streaming platform yesterday (July 22).

The episode titled 'Those Old Scientists', which would have streamed on July 27, landed on the platform yesterday at 7pm Eastern Time and midnight British time.

The synopsis for 'Those Old Scientists' reads: "An accident while investigating a time portal sends Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid, Lower Decks) through time from the 24th Century, and Captain Pike (Anson Mount, Strange New Worlds) and his crew must get him back where he belongs before he can somehow alter the timeline."

Lower Decks is the animated adventure series following the crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the USS Cerritos.

Joining Jack Quaid in jumping from animation to live-action is Tawny Newsome, who voices Beckett Mariner in Lower Decks.

Strange New Worlds is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series. The show follows the crew of the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike.

It also stars Ethan Peck as fan-favourite character Spock and Celia Rose Gooding as Star Trek staple Nyota Uhura.

Gizmodo has reported that the early release of the episode will shake up the remaining three episodes, stating that the finale, which was to land on August 17, will now be on August 10.

Season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks is set to air later this year on September 7.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 streams on Paramount+, with new episodes on Thursdays.
