Starbucks Seemingly Discontinued This Menu Item and Fans Are 'Heartbroken'

Including, one, Kristin Chenoweth.

There’s one thing I know for certain: I will never put it past a brand to quietly discontinue an item. In fact, I almost expect brands to pull items off the shelves without any notice rather than yelling the news from the rooftop. Because, if a brand announces a discontinuation, there could easily be a social media uproar—just look at Jimmy John’s and its Kickin’ Ranch.

And a brand that tends to be really great about sneaking things off menus is Starbucks. Don’t believe me? Just look at my beloved Toasted White Chocolate Mocha that got the axe this past holiday season to make way for the new Iced Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai.

That’s why when I saw actress Kristin Chenoweth asking where her favorite Starbucks menu item went, I thought she’d be getting an invite to the “my favorite item was discontinued” text chain.

“Dear @starbucks why did you get rid of the new potatoes egg and cheese bite thingies?  #heartbroken,” Chenoweth tweeted.

The Tony Award-winning actress is talking about the Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes that hit the menu at the beginning of the year. The new “bakes” joined Starbucks’ popular egg bites, but with a bit of quiche-like flair. Instead of getting cooked sous-vide style, like Starbucks’ popular egg bites, the Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes are baked (duh) with diced potatoes, eggs, spinach, Cheddar cheese, and chives.

Did Starbucks Discontinue the Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes?

Because the Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes were introduced along with Starbucks’ 2024 winter menu, which included the new Iced Shaken Hazelnut Oatmilk Espresso and the returning Pistachio Latte and Pistachio Cream Cold Brew, I assumed if Chenoweth was having a hard time finding them, they were likely on a limited-time run. Especially because Starbucks recently announced its spring menu, which features two new drinks: the Iced Lavender Cream Oatmilk Matcha and Iced Lavender Oatmilk Latte.

To my (pleasant) surprise, however, Starbucks responded with some unexpected news.

“Dear Kristin, The bakes aren't discontinued, they're just very...Popular,” Starbucks tweeted back, making reference to Chenoweth’s beloved song in “Wicked.” “Some of our stores are experiencing temporary outages but they'll be restocked soon as part of our year-round menu.”

Starbucks told us the same:

“We are thrilled to see our customers’ excitement for the Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes at Starbucks. While the Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes will be on Starbucks menu year-round, some stores in the U.S. are experiencing a temporary outage and availability will temporarily vary by market and store,” according to a Starbucks spokesperson.

That’s good news for Chenoweth and all you other Potato, Cheddar & Chive Bakes lovers out there. Plus, it’s even better news for those who haven’t tried it yet because, obviously, it’s tasty enough to have sold out this quickly!

The bad news is there’s no telling how long the item could be sold out. So, if you see us refreshing the Starbucks app’s food section every day, you know why.
