Steph Curry’s Whiskey Brand Just Dropped a New Bourbon

Listen, there are some whiskeys that are really, really expensive, and even if you think it’s a little ridiculous, what’s in the bottle is good enough to justify the price. Then there are those that are extremely questionable, bottles that make you wonder why the marketing department decided on the price and who is actually going to buy it. Given the big caveat that I have not actually tried the whiskey in question, it is hard to imagine who is actually going to pay $950 for a bottle Steph Curry’s new Gentleman’s Cut bourbon called Player Exclusive: Father and Son Edition.

Steph Curry launched his whiskey brand in 2023 with John Schwartz, owner of the Amuse Bouche Winery in Napa. The two sourced the inaugural bourbon, aged from five to seven years, from Kentucky’s Boone County Distilling Co., and even that release was priced high at $80 per bottle—especially considering that it was just an average bourbon. Then last spring, they upped the ante (and I mean way up) with the 15-year-old Player Exclusive, priced at an astounding $4,500. That’s more than some bottles of Pappy, for point of reference. The new Player Exclusive: Father and Son Edition pulls back a bit, but is this 16-year-old bourbon really worth $950?

Having not tasted the whiskey, I can’t really say . . . but that seems really, really steep. The bourbon was distilled in August 2008 from a mashbill of 75 percent corn, 13 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley (source is undisclosed, but possibly also Boone County) and bottled at 100 proof. The age statement and name are supposed to be a tribute to Curry’s 16 years in the NBA and to his father, Wardell “Dell” Curry Sr., who was also a significant player in the league.

“Just like so many others, I consider my father to be one of the greatest,” said Curry in a statement. “Growing up, my father was an amazing role model to me; he showed me what it means to be a hard worker, have a solid work ethic, and give it your all . . . I wanted to bottle this amazing feeling, and share it with the world, and the result was a delectable combination of flavors that came together through the Player Exclusive: Father and Son Edition.”

Official tasting notes describe dried cherries and “caramelized elements” on the palate, along with some “fine tobacco leaf [that] can be tasted as it lends a warm earthy feel to the bourbon.” Okay, that sounds pretty good, but it’s worth pointing out that you can find a bottle of Knob Creek 18 for less than $200, Michter’s 10 Year for less than $500, and Elijah Craig 18 for less than $300. If you’re a dedicated Steph head or just really curious about this new bourbon, you can find it available to purchase now from specialty retailers, and the original Gentleman’s Cut is available at Total Wine.
