Gillian Anderson, 52, Is Done Wearing Bras Even if Her ‘Breasts Reach Her Belly Button’
Gillian Anderson, 52, revealed in an Instagram Live that she’s no longer wearing bras.
“I don’t care if my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra, it’s just too f—king uncomfortable,” she said.
While the pandemic made plenty people ditch pokey underwire, sales for more comfortable bralettes and sports bras are actually on the rise.
Over a year spent indoors with little socialization has completely changed the role of the bra. In short, many people who frequently wore them pre-lockdowns found little need for them in quarantine, and now, can hardly be asked to wear one. Actress Gillian Anderson is one of those people.
“I don’t wear a bra anymore. I can’t wear a bra. I’m sorry,” she said in a recent Instagram Live. “I don’t care if my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra, it’s just too f—king uncomfortable.”
Any many viewers couldn’t agree more. “I never wear a bra and I get a lot of distasteful comments about it, so knowing Gillian Anderson doesn’t wear a bra anymore is information most pleasing to me!” one person tweeted. “If two-time Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actress Gillian Anderson says no more bras, who are we to disagree?” another added.
While some say the pandemic killed the bra — and plenty have joined Anderson in ditching them — what’s closer to reality is that underwire bras are becoming a thing of the past. Sports bras and bralettes, on the other hand, are seeing a rise in popularity.
According to a report from NPD Group, per Vox, sports bra sales saw a 32% increase after March 2020, and bralettes and wireless bras were up 5%. So even those not willing to go full commando like their favorite Crown actress are prioritizing comfort.
And undergarments aren’t the only fashion piece that Anderson likes to keep loose. In a recent conversation with Helena Bonham Carter for Interview Magazine, she said one of her favorite outfits is a pair of velvet leggings and a button-up sweater — after she spends the morning lounging in her pajamas, that is.
“I’m in pajamas for a while, but I don’t like making French toast for the kids in pajamas, so I change into this,” she said. And even to take her kids to school, she dresses comfortable but proper. “I may have once put my pajama top on and a sweater over it, but nobody knew any better,” she added.
The Sex Education star’s care-free attitude is refreshing in a world where women’s appearances always seem to be in focus. But it’s an attitude that Anderson has had to consciously work at and why she doesn’t have Instagram on her phone.
“I don’t want that level of self-obsession in my adult life,” she told Bonham Carter. “I’m afraid of what will happen if I get caught up in it.
