With Christmas giving rise to maximalist decorating, vintage ornaments and disco balls, it's no surprise that alternative trees are proving popular too.

Choosing the perfect Christmas tree is no longer a toss up between a real or artificial one because alternative designs are now serious contenders. From wooden Christmas trees to Ikea's space-saving wall tree, and twig trees to paper trees, Christmas home decor is taking an unconventional turn.

Supersized paper trees in particular are in the spotlight this year. In our Christmas decorating trend report for 2024 we talked about the rise of sculptural paper decorations and looked at the surge in oversized ornaments, the bigger the better. Supersized honeycomb paper trees combine both trends, so you really do get the best of both worlds.

This year, homeware retailer Garden Trading is selling a 6ft paper Christmas tree for £150 (it's usually £200 but you can take advantage of some early Black Friday deals). Made from cotton paper, this honeycomb paper tree is big enough to take the place of your normal tree, or seeing as multiple 'show trees' are on the rise, it can be used to bring seasonal cheer to other living spaces.

Stylish and contemporary, the XXL Maddox tree is freestanding and available in four on-trend colours: rich berry, inky blue, warm white and forest green.

A great styling tip is to play with scale by grouping it with other smaller-sized paper trees. It's a space-saver too: it's delivered flat and is easy to assemble, and post-Christmas it can be folded and stored away, ready to take out next year for more festive fun.

If you're looking for a slightly smaller tree, we've spotted a 3ft honeycomb paper tree from Cox & Cox. Available in a cream colourway and finished with champagne-coloured edging, it has a magnetic closure for easy, flat storage.

We've also been admiring Ian Snow's bright green paper Christmas tree. At 5ft tall, it's handmade in Jaipur using recycled paper and traditional origami techniques, with simple and invisible magnetic fastenings.

Happy decorating!
