Every year, people across the U.S. pack up and move — sometimes for a new job, sometimes to be closer to family, and sometimes just for a change of scenery. And just in time for the end of the year, the latest migration report from Atlas Van Lines reveals some surprising moving trends for 2024.

Atlas Van Lines measured relocations between November 2023 to the end of October 2024 to determine what states had the highest percentage of inbound moves in 2024, and the states they moved to. According to Atlas, their data “aligns with Census Bureau data indicating that interstate moves are holding steady,” and that “this year shows the highest number of ‘balanced’ states in the last five years,” meaning that as many people left as came in.

Here’s where people headed in 2024, according to their latest report:

1. Arkansas

Wait… Arkansas? Yep, you read that right. The Natural State is topping the list for inbound moves this year. Affordable housing, a slower pace of life, and wide-open spaces are drawing in families, retirees, and anyone looking to escape high-cost living. Little Rock is starting to hum with new energy, too, thanks to growing opportunities in healthcare and education.

2. Rhode Island

Small but mighty, Rhode Island has surged to the number two spot for movers in 2024. With its coastal beauty, charming towns, and surprisingly affordable living compared to neighboring Massachusetts, it’s easy to see why people are heading here. Providence, in particular, is catching the eye of remote workers and young creatives looking for New England vibes without the Boston price tag.

3. North Carolina

North Carolina is still holding strong and for good reason. It’s got the perfect mix of growing cities, solid job markets, and easy access to the mountains and the beach. Raleigh and Charlotte remain tech and finance hotspots, offering plenty of job opportunities, while Asheville keeps pulling in nature lovers and creatives even as it recovers from Hurricane Helene. The state’s ability to deliver both career growth and quality of life makes it a consistent favorite.

4. Washington, D.C.

Surprise! Washington, D.C., is back on the radar in 2024. After years of people leaving cities for the suburbs, the District’s cultural scene, job opportunities, and improved housing options are drawing folks back. Plus, its tech and professional sectors are booming, making it a solid choice for young professionals looking for a fresh start.

5. Idaho

Idaho is still doing its thing, holding strong in the top 10 for another year. Boise remains a magnet for families, retirees, and remote workers, thanks to its friendly communities, access to nature, and affordability. If you want big skies, small-town vibes, and all the hiking and fishing you can handle, Idaho is calling your name.

6. Tennessee

Tennessee’s southern charm hasn’t worn off one bit. Nashville continues to grow as a creative and business hub, while cities like Chattanooga and Knoxville are pulling in families looking for affordability and revitalized urban spaces. Add in the state’s low taxes, great music, and stunning scenery, and it’s no wonder people are making the move.

7. Maine

Maine has quietly become a favorite for people who want to slow things down. Coastal towns like Portland are booming with food, art, and culture, while the rest of the state offers rugged beauty and small-town charm. It’s perfect for anyone dreaming of a quieter life surrounded by nature (and lobster rolls). In 2023, it was the most moved-to-state, according to Atlas.

8. Connecticut

Connecticut is making a comeback. For years, people moved out of the state, but now it’s pulling in families and professionals looking for a more affordable suburban lifestyle within commuting distance of New York City. Places like Stamford and New Haven are growing again, with improved infrastructure and revitalized neighborhoods that offer a fresh start.

9. Washington

Washington State blends urban opportunity with outdoor adventure, and movers are loving it. Seattle’s tech sector is still going strong, but smaller cities like Spokane and Bellingham are also attracting people who want a lower cost of living without sacrificing quality of life. Mountains, forests, and coastline? It’s a hard combination to beat.

10. Alaska

If you’re looking for something totally different, Alaska is where it’s at. Known for its jaw-dropping landscapes and unique lifestyle, it’s pulling in adventurers, retirees, and remote workers who want to get away from it all. Job opportunities in tourism and energy are helping too, giving movers a reason to head north.

While those states were the top “inbound” states, the states with the highest percentage of moves away included Louisiana, California, Illinois, South Dakota, and New York.
