This new taco spot has replaced a celebrity-owned restaurant in Johnson County
Burger restaurant Wahlburgers lived a short life at 11935 S. Black Bob Road in Olathe.
But the owners of Viva Tacos & Tequila hope they can outlast the celebrity-owned spot’s less-than-five-year run.
Viva opened this month in the former Wahlburgers spot. It serves many of the same offerings as the Leawood location at 5031 W. 135th St.
Some of its menu items include seafood tacos, fajita quesadillas and green enchiladas.
The building in the Olathe Pointe Shopping Center was once covered in wood paneling and decorated with lime green accents. (Lime green is Wahlburgers’ signature color.)
Now, skull chandeliers hang from the ceiling and faux grass sprouts out of the walls. A large mural by It-Ra Icons depicts sunflowers, butterflies and a little girl in a bright purple dress.
Customers filled the booths and tables at lunchtime Friday. Some selected from Viva’s extensive drink menu, which offers jalapeno margaritas, palomas, jalisco mules and more. A bar stretches across one side of the restaurant.
Those looking to try something new can order the trompo al pastor — meat and pineapple skewered and served vertically, hanging from a wooden box.
For dessert: fried ice cream, flan, sweet plantains, churros and more.
Wahlburgers was founded by actor/musicians Mark and Donnie Wahlberg and their chef brother, Paul.
The brothers opened their Olathe restaurant in mid-2018 but closed it at the start of 2023. Before the location was Wahlburgers, it housed On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina.
Wahlburgers announced last year that it would only open locations inside Hy-Vee grocery stores moving forward.
Wahlburgers is inside several Kansas City area HyVee stores, including 8900 W. 119th St. in Overland Park and 5330 N.W. 64th St. in the Northland.
Several other Mexican restaurants have opened in Johnson County lately, including Las Palomas, at 7215 W. 75th St.
