Taylor Swift's Rhode Island Could Become Private

Currently, anyone who wants to walk the stretch of Rhode Island sand where Taylor Swift owns a summer home, they can. But that may soon end.

The Rhode Island Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a lower court's ruling that said landowners in a section of Westerly could put up fences to keep the public off their two-mile stretch of beach. The attorney general's office and environmental groups had argued that the land had been dedicated to the public more than a century ago. The court disagreed, finding the beach is privately owned.

The attorney general says he's disappointed but points out that the decision does not affect a state constitutional guarantee to access the shoreline.

Swift frequently vacations at her eight-bedroom 1930 home in the Watch Hill section of town. In 2013 a 23-year-old Swift reportedly paid $17.75 million for the 11,000-square-foot house in an all-cash deal. The 5.23-acre property had been listed for $24 million.

Last year the entertainer invited high-profile friends like Blake Lively, Ruby Rose, Gigi Hadid, Ryan Reynolds, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss and her then-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston to celebrate the Fourth of July at the house. (She also, it would seem from Instagram, invited a professional photographer to capture the group taking advantage of the Watch Hill beach and an inflatable water slide.)

In any case, if this ruling stands and Swift decides to follow her neighbors' lead, she may soon have a private beach of her own.
