This teen wore her mom's dress to prom 22 years later
An Ohio teenager didn’t spend hours scavenging through mall department stores or specialty boutiques to find that perfect prom dress. It just so happened to already be in her mom’s closet.
Ally Johnson, 18, rummaged through her mom’s wardrobe and found the perfect vintage prom dress — it was a black, form-fitting scoop-neck beaded gown that had the old-school Hollywood vibe that Johnson was seeking. But what makes it extra special: her mom wore that very dress to her own prom back in 1995!

“I tried it on and it fit perfectly. It didn’t need any alterations. I just loved it from the second I tried it on,” Johnson said in an interview with Today Style.
Ally’s mom, Lori, told Today that they didn’t have as many shopping options back in the ’90s, so she and her mother visited about 10 stores before finding the dazzling number at a vintage store.

“At first, I was like, ‘I don’t know if I really like that dress,’ but I tried it on and I absolutely loved it,” Lori said. The 39-year-old says that it was her own mother who preserved the dress after prom.
“It’s funny, she said, ‘Well, you never know, maybe one day you’ll have a daughter and she’ll wear it,'” Lori said. “I never thought that would come to fruition.”
Seeing Ally in the dress was a special moment for Lori as it reminded her of how much her daughter is growing up. “It just made me so happy, because we’re very much alike anyway,” Lori added.
Who knows — perhaps Ally’s daughter will be the next one in line to wear the dress!
