Tell us: How does your anxiety manifest itself?
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, in any given year, one in five Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. By the age of 40, 50 per cent of the population will have or have had a mental illness.
The CMHA also reports that anxiety disorders affect 5 per cent of the household population and that almost one half (49 per cent) of those who feel they have suffered from depression or anxiety have never sought medical help.
There are a variety of different types of anxiety disorders, such as social anxiety, panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, and with them come different symptoms that can range in severity.
According to the Government of Canada, more than a quarter of people say that their disorder effected their life “quite a bit” or “extremely” in the last year and that basic activities and the ability to work were challenging.
Some of those manifestations of anxiety can be obvious, such as someone with social anxiety avoiding situations where they feel like they might embarrass themselves, while other manifestations might be less expected to some, like restlessness or compulsions – and some might even be debilitating, like panic attacks or depression.
In a new series debuting next month, we explore why anxiety is so prevalent — and how it’s changing peoples’ lives.
