If you think driving in Texas is bad, it could be worse.

According to WalletHub, Texas is ranked in the Top 10 best states to drive in the U.S.

The study compared all 50 states on 31 different key metrics, focusing on: cost of vehicle ownership and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure, safety and access to vehicles and their maintenance.

“Owning a car can really squeeze your wallet if you’re not in the right location. On top of having pricey gas, maintenance and insurance expenses, some states can hurt you even more financially with excessive traffic congestion, which wastes both your fuel and your productivity,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo wrote in the report. “The best states to drive in are ones that are relatively rural, with smaller populations, a low cost of living, well-maintained roads and safe motorists.”

WalletHub compiled its data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as the Federal Highway Administration and State Farm, among others. They found that Kansas is the best place to drive in the country (No. 1) while Hawaii is the worst (No. 50).

Where does Texas rank on WalletHub’s study?

Texas sits at No. 9 overall.

The Lone Star state made the top 10 because it is also No. 2 for car dealerships per capita, No. 3 for average gas prices and No. 4 for auto repair shops per capita. It’s also worth noting that Texas ranked No. 18 for auto maintenance shops.

This may come as a surprise to Texans. Just last year in 2024, Texas was on Forbes’ list of the cities with the worst drivers, specifically talking about Dallas and Fort Worth. It was also found that Texas is the eighth-worst state for distracted driving, per a study from Bader Law.

However, WalletHub’s study is less about Texas drivers and more about road conditions and vehicle maintenance.
