With more celebrities choosing to embrace their grey roots on the red carpet, the desire for silver and ashy hair is stronger than ever. But caring for your natural greys require the right hydration and nourishment. Due to the natural coarseness and brittle texture of grey hair, Nexxus stylist Nicole Casmassima says the first step to taming and styling your new roots and end is with a new shampoo.
“Grey hair can be difficult to handle because it is coarser than your natural hair and with a new mixture of hair textures, it can be difficult to style,” she says. “I recommend using a [gentle and deep moisturizing] shampoo and conditioner. This will help weigh down the coarse or frizzy ‘curliness’ and make it easier to style.”
Like blonde hair, dull grey hair can sometimes gives off unwanted warm, yellow undertones. So to help restore shine and vibrancy, Casmassima recommends neutralizing brassiness with a colour-toning shampoo. “You should also incorporate a purple shampoo when you feel the grey is getting a bit brassy — but don’t use it too often or you will end up with a blue tint to your hair,” she adds.
Maybe you’re like Catherine O'Hara and Alex Borstein, who both sophisticatedly let roots roam free on during the Critic’s Choice Awards, and are gradually transitioning to grey. Or maybe you've been embracing it for years. Either way, to help you better care for your hair, below, we’ve gathered together the best grey hair shampoos on the market.
