'The Crown' actor Khalid Abdalla calls for ceasefire in Gaza on the 75th Emmys red carpet: 'Never again'
The British actor has been making statements about the war at every red carpet since December.
British actor Khalid Abdalla is making a statement on the 75th Emmys red carpet in Los Angeles.
"The Crown" star walked up to photographers in an all-black ensemble, with the words "Never again" written on his left palm, facing the crowd.
The phrase, associated with lessons learned from the Holocaust has recently "opened up a fiercely fought debate about the phrase's true meaning," The Guardian reported late last year, as the Israel-Hamas war continues.
It's been 101 days since Oct. 7, 2023, when the Israel-Hamas escalation began, with reports of more than 24,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis killed in the conflict. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently hearing a case against Israel, filed by South Africa, accused of "genocidal acts" against Palestinians in Gaza.
Actor Abdalla took to X (aka Twitter) during the Emmys, quoting Martin Luther King Jr., "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
He continued, "Mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living. The dove is from Bethlehem, the scales of justice for everywhere and the [ICJ]. Because all live are sacred."
He has been making statements in support of an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas since late last year.
Over the weekend, the actor took to the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica with more writing on his hands, this time reading "ICJ." On the red carpet, Abdalla pointed to a pin on his white jacket, with the justice symbol of a scale.
He took to X with a video from the moment actor Mark Ruffalo joined him in protest. Ruffalo was seen putting his hands on Abdalla's jacket, framing the justice pin.
May justice bring peace and peace bring justice. May we all live up to South Africa’s promise to the world, embodied in truth and reconciliation, and the long walk to freedom. #CeasefireNow #ICJ & thank you @MarkRuffalo pic.twitter.com/n64VcELAau

At the Golden Globes last week, Abdalla wore a black suit with a white band around his arm — which some saw as standing in solidarity with victims of the war, as was once done in the Balkans.
He was also photographed pointing to a pin of the white dove on his jacket, likely symbolizing hope.
On Dec. 5, 2023, at the finale celebration of "The Crown" in which he portrays Princess Diana's lover Dodi Fayed, Abdalla wore a white suit with more writing on his hands. The backs of his hands read "Permanent ceasefire," while his palms read "Return the hostages" and "End the occupation."
