I Think This App Is the *Best* Way to Make Phone Wallpapers

Shuffles by Pinterest isn’t a new app (seriously, it’s three years old), and I’ve used it ever since it was released. But I was shocked when I realized none of my friends were on this app or knew you could make cool iPhone wallpapers on it. I felt like I had to shout from the rooftops how fun this app is. It combines the childhood joy of collecting pretty knickknacks with the effortless fun of creating digital mood boards.

If you have a Pinterest account already, you can log in with the same information, and the app will access all of your boards to create directly from the images you love. Plus you can search all of Pinterest through Shuffles to find the exact thing you want. I could spend hours (and I have) on Shuffles creating wallpapers, mood boards, or random collages.

Shuffles by Pinterest is a pretty straightforward app, but in case you’re a visual learner like myself, here’s a quick tutorial of how I designed a “Country Cowgirl” wallpaper for Dorm Therapy. (You can also find other phone wallpapers based on cute dorm aesthetics on Dorm Therapy’s Pinterest!)

4 Tips for Making Your Own Shuffles by Pinterest Wallpaper

There’s no wrong way to use Shuffles by Pinterest, but these are my favorite tips for putting together your own iPhone wallpaper.

Focus on the Lower Part of the Shuffle

When I first started playing around on Shuffles, I quickly realized that, if I was going to create a phone wallpaper, I needed to keep the top quarter plain-ish so that the time was legible (I recommend leaving more than you think you’ll need).

Move Everything to the Middle

For iPhones, the Apple wallpaper setting typically trims the outer edges of the image, so I try to push all of the stickers and objects to the middle so they don’t get cut off. It always takes a few tries for me to get the spacing right, but my trick is to make the collage smaller than you actually think you want it to appear. That way, when the image gets cropped in, the collage in the middle will be closer to the size you initially envisioned.

Add Personal Images

I love customizing my Shuffles by adding my own photos and experimenting with different frames, overlays, and truly anything I can think of. It’s made it so fun to digitally scrapbook vacations or meaningful college moments and create a unique wallpaper that I can see every day. I especially like that I can decide to make my finished Shuffles private if I don’t want my personal photos shared.

Go for Lots of Layers

In my opinion, the more layers, the better because they not only allow you to include more cute pins, but they make for a more engaging and creative wallpaper. I always start my collages by layering a bunch of images, patterns, and textures for the background. Another tip is to cut shapes out of images and layer them on top of the background (versus using standard rectangular images) to get even more visual texture.

Shuffles by Pinterest is made to create personal and unique collages, and I’m obsessed with all the possibilities. Start designing your own — and check out Dorm Therapy’s Pinterest for a wallpaper collection based on favorite dorm aesthetics!
