After many months of reflection, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced that they will be stepping back from their senior roles within the royal family.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family, and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment,” the couple’s statement read.
While it’s clear the couple has had a rough time in the spotlight, especially this past year, the royal family can’t help but feel “deeply hurt” by the timing and manner of the couple’s surprise announcement, says a source from Buckingham Palace.

So, what’s next for Sussexes? The couple’s future plans include balancing their time between the United Kingdom and North America, raising their son Archie privately and also launching an upcoming charitable entity.
Just a day before publishing their personal statement on their website, Harry and Meghan returned to the U.K. for their first engagement of 2020, which followed a lengthy vacation in British Columbia. And during the appearance, the royal wore a tiny piece of jewellery that makes some royal fans think the royal expected a backlash.
The Duchess, looking polished in her signature monochrome style, was dressed head-to-toe in various shades of brown. Meghan wore a rust-coloured satin skirt, a turtleneck, velvet pumps and a tan REISS coat, and accessorized with a meaningful piece of jewellery, the Milka Hamsa Ring from Turkish designer Kismet by Milka.

This particular ring features a sapphire evil eye inside a palm-shaped amulet, popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa, and commonly used in jewellery and wall hangings as a symbol of peace, hope and prosperity.
Markle is no stranger to jewellery pieces with significant meaning. During her 2019 royal tour in Africa, the 38-year-old was spotted wearing a necklace featuring the Hamsa Hand.
She also wore the ring on the couple’s trip to Botswana in 2017. In one of the photos she recently shared, Meghan is seen holding an elephant’s trunk while wearing the meaningful piece of jewellery. In addition to her favourite Hamsa Ring, on her left wrist, she debuted a silver steel version of an African elephant hair bracelet.
According to Hello!, people in Africa believe elephants symbolize the connecting factor between heaven and earth. Traditional styles of this bracelet featured real elephant hair, which is believed to bring good luck, health, love and prosperity.
Last year, while Meghan was wrapping up her South African tour, she wore a bracelet with yet another evil-eye charm, this time by British label Alemdara.
Whatever Meghan is up to next, we’re wishing her the best of luck.
In the meantime, we’ve gathered a selection of Hamsa and evil jewellery picks.
