Lady Gabriella and her late husband Thomas Kingston were married for four years before his death.

Kingston married the daughter of Prince Michael of Kent, Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin, on May 18, 2019, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, almost exactly one year after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding at the same location on May 19, 2018.

The British financier also previously dated Kate Middleton’s younger sister Pippa Middleton, who is now married to James Matthews. Though the two ended their relationship in 2011, they remained friends through the years.

At the start of his career, Kingston was a project manager for a government-sponsored conflict resolution project in Iraq. While there, he worked on hostage negotiations and also helped Canon Andrew White, the vicar of the only Anglican church in Iraq, with various tasks.

“The thing about Tom was he was never scared,” he told The Telegraph following Kingston’s death. “Whatever I asked him to do he would do it with a big smile on his face in the middle of a war zone.”

He was previously in a relationship with Pippa Middleton

Lady Gabriella and Kingston had been linked since 2015 and in September 2018, Buckingham Palace officially announced they had gotten engaged the previous month. Kingston popped the question in Sark, one of the Channel Islands just off the coast of France.

On May 18, 2019, the couple tied the knot at Windsor Castle. For the big day, Lady Gabriella wore a lace bridal gown by Luisa Beccaria and accessorized with a Russian fringe style tiara in a nod to family tradition as both her mother and grandmother wore the same one on their special days. The guest list included Queen Elizabeth and a surprise appearance by Prince Harry, who had just welcomed his son Archie less than two weeks earlier.

Kingston could often be seen by Lady Gabriella’s side at royal events like Trooping the Colour, a celebration of the monarch's birthday, and the Royal Ascot. He attended the latter in June 2023 as he and his wife sat by King Charles and Queen Camilla’s side in the royal box.

The pair stepped out again shortly after for a Chanel exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Less than two weeks before his death, Kingston accompanied Lady Gabriella and Queen Camilla at a Celebration of Shakespeare event on Feb. 14.

He died in February 2024

Two days after his death on Feb. 25, 2024, in Gloucestershire, the palace spokesperson released a statement that King Charles and Queen Camilla were aware of Kingston’s death and sent their “heartfelt thoughts” to his family.

"The King and The Queen have been informed of Thomas’s death and join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family. In particular, Their Majesties send their most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family," the statement said.

Three days later, Kingston’s cause of death was identified as a traumatic head wound. Senior coroner for Gloucestershire, Katy Skerrett, said Kingston had lunch with his parents before his father took their dogs on a walk, The Telegraph reported.

"On his return, Mr. Kingston was not in the house," Skerrett said, according to The Telegraph.

The outlet reported he had died by suicide at his parent’s home in the Cotswolds. Per a post from Sky News correspondent Dan Whitehead on X (formerly Twitter), Kingston "was found in a locked outbuilding with a catastrophic head injury — a gun was found at the scene."

The inquest into his death was adjourned to a later date, PEOPLE confirmed.
