Thurston and Eva Moore’s top 10 Miami restaurants

Thurston Moore, co-founder of seminal indie-rock band Sonic Youth, has for several years been spending winters in his native Coral Gables with wife Eva Printz.

One of the couple’s chief avocations while they’re here is, as do so many locals, investigating the wide range of ethnic and neighborhood eating spots across Miami -- preferably if they’re within cycling range of their North Gables home.

Here, in their own words, are 10 of their faves:

1.) La Casita 3805 SW Eighth St. It’s a family style restaurant with excellent lighting and their white table-clothes encourage a quiet tone, but there’s usually at least three birthdays going on for someone’s abuelita — cozy vibes all around.

2.) Tinta Y Cafe, 1315 Ponce de Leon. They have the best pastelera and their staff of cool artists and musicians make this place a super fun hang where you can hear through the grapevine in the coffee queue what art gallery exhibitions are going on and which cool local bands and secret noise shows are happening that night.

3.) Palacio del Jugos

These Miami food stands dotted throughout the city are perfect when you need something quick. Their signature colors (red and yellow) match the colors of our favorite Pure Funk DJs speakers.

4.) We still love going into the Ball & Chain for a quick cha-cha and one of their chic tropical variations on the mojito.

5.) Big Pink, on Collins is an old school favorite for pancakes with the kids after an early morning swim or walk on the beach. It’s a good spot for dogs too, the waitstaff is very welcoming to canines.

6.) Matsuri, 5759 Bird Rd - is delicious Japanese and hidden in the Red Bird strip mall (which has a few places to park your bicycle but should have more, ahem Miami!).

7.) The winner for the local hero, which we heard about through our friends at Palm Film Lab, is Super Subs Etc. 6380 Bird Rd #4826. Classic, no frills, subtropical submarine sandwich any way you can dig it.

8.) Beehive, 6490 SW 40th - best vegan and spot for your vitamins and tinctures.

9.) Kon Chau, 8376 SW 40th St, Floor 1 Our besties Susie and Harry introduced us to the best dim sum in Miami. We dream of their eggplant and bok choi.

10.) The absolute best guacamole outside Homestead is at Don Maguey, 4747 W Flagler. Family run sweethearts prepare classic dishes exactly how you’d like it and never make you feel like you’re being too fussy.
