How to craft perfect summer mocktails

Creating a great mocktail involves creativity, balance and high-quality ingredients. Here are some tips to elevate your sip.

1. Use fresh ingredients

Freshly squeezed juices, herbs and fruits significantly enhance the flavor and visual appeal of your mocktail. If you want, skip the canned or bottled juices that can taste flat and overly sweet.

2. Balance flavors

Aim for a balanced mix of sweet, sour, bitter and savory flavors. Use natural sweeteners like honey or agave syrup, balance with citrus juices, or add bitterness with ingredients like tonic water or herbal bitters.

3. Incorporate herbs and spices

Fresh herbs like mint, basil and rosemary add depth and complexity to mocktails. Spices such as ginger, cinnamon and cardamom can also introduce new flavors.

4. Garnish well

A well-chosen garnish not only adds visual appeal but can also enhance the drink’s aroma and flavor. Try using citrus slices, fresh herbs, edible flowers or colorful fruit skewers.

Raspberry mojito mocktail recipe

This viral recipe by @themindfulmocktail is low in sugar and antioxidant rich. And I love some juicy raspberries in a summer drink.

Ingredients:

  • 8-10 raspberries, fresh or thawed

  • ½ lime, chopped

  • 8-10 mint leaves

  • 1 tsp. monk fruit sweetener (or your preferred sweetener)

  • 1 oz. non-alcoholic rum or a dash of ACV (optional)

  • Soda water (also use lime sparkling water or kombucha for a mixer)

  • Optional garnish: raspberries, mint and lime

Directions:

  1. Add the monk fruit sweetener to your glass with a tablespoon of warm (not boiling!) water. Mix until the crystals have dissolved.

  2. Add the raspberries and crush with a muddler, then do the same with the lime. Smack the mint in your hands to release the scent, then add it to the glass. Press down gently a couple of times with the muddler.

  3. Fill your glass with ice and add your alcohol-free rum or ACV (if using), then top with your choice of mixer. Stir gently and garnish.
