Spooky and ghoulish, Halloween has always had a dark edge, but it's taking a turn for 2024. The 'decorating rules' have been relaxed, and this year, vintage elements, bold patterns and vibrant colours all add an unexpected but lively twist. As spooky season nears, tap into the hottest Halloween decorating trends for 2024...

1. A vintage Halloween

The seventies revival has been a key interior trend this year alongside buying vintage and antique furniture, so it's perhaps unsurprising that retro and vintage aesthetics are making a major comeback for Halloween. According to new data from Pinterest, leading the top searches are ‘Hippie Halloween decor’ (up 190 per cent year-on-year) and ‘Disco Halloween’ (up 175 per cent). Nostalgia is high on the list too – '90s Halloween decorations’ are up 140 per cent.

2. Stripes à la Beetlejuice

Timeless stripes will forever have a place in interiors, but for Halloween, make it strictly black and white. It's all about channeling the gothic glamour vibe of this year's blockbuster sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

'Stripes are the signature print of the Beetlejuice film and will be the main design element to consider when styling your home to achieve an authentic, Beetlejuice-inspired style,' says Cassandra Leisz, creative director at Ruggable. 'You’ll want to choose moody hues of charcoal, black, navy or burgundy to really hone in on the gothic undertone of the film. For example, draw inspiration from Beetlejuice’s very own suit and incorporate black and white stripes into your interior for a striking finish. This bold pattern has been known to create dramatic depth in modern, eclectic, Art Deco, and glam decor alike. So try mixing it in with any aesthetic for a visual pop.'

To pare it back, soften a monochrome vase with a verdant green houseplant, or add hot pink dinner candles to a black candleholder to create a striking table centrepiece.

3. 'Pinkoween'

Can Halloween be cute? It's as far removed from eerie and ghoulish as you could get, but pink Halloween decor is on the rise. You might see it referred to as the 'pinkoween' trend, but either way, Halloween is getting a chic makeover with a move towards more softer, pastel colours.

Whether it's blush or bubble gum, rosy palettes will rule, enabling you to add a personal twist to your Halloween decor this year. 'The resurgence of pink reflects a nostalgic, yet bold, energy,' says Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s trend expert.

4. Minimalist and classy

Another unexpected twist for spooky season is the minimalist Halloween tablescaping trend, and for 2024, the more pared-back the better.

'I think the minimalist trend of Halloween decor that fits around your interior style rather than more classic, bold decorations will be more popular this year,' says interior expert Tommy Kebbson, who's working with Nio Cocktails on creating the perfect Halloween tablescape.

'Sleek designs that scream "comfortable luxury" are very popular right now. Muted colours, plush furnishings and small luxurious details have been something I have seen grow in popularity, which will bleed into seasonal designs, such as for Halloween.'

Neutral-toned pumpkins such as cream, sage green or earthy yellow will tap into this look, says Tommy, alongside incorporating vintage elements to create authenticity. 'Adding vintage elements can add an old-world feel to your space. Try dark lace, antique furniture or vintage portraits to add some darkness to your home without overwhelming the space,' he advises.

The final flourish? Introduce low lighting and create a moody atmosphere with candlesticks. 'You can add some spookiness through darker candlestick holders, especially if you can find vintage holders or ones with a drip effect,' Tommy says.

5. Plants and gourds

Indoor plants are taking centre stage this Halloween, so bring a corner of your home back to life by styling colourful houseplants with wonderful gourds to create a hauntingly beautiful display that's full of eerie charm.

To weave in seasonal colour, Claire Bishop, Dobbies' senior houseplant buyer, suggests the following: 'The Calathea Crocata Tassmania, with its vivid orange flower spikes, can bring a touch of autumn warmth into your home. This plant adds a striking splash of colour, making it ideal for creating a bold contrast against darker greenery or eerie decor.'

To create depth and intrigue, pair this with Zamioculcas Black Raven, known for its dark, glossy leaves. 'The Black Raven is a real statement piece and looks incredibly dramatic when placed in a dark corner with an overhead spotlight casting spooky shadows,' says Claire.

One of the top performers for Halloween will be Aeschynanthus Rasta, which Claire says is 'perfect for adding some haunting twists with its curling foliage.' For a green-fingered scare, add Cucurbita to empty spaces, she says, 'they bring a spooky vibe and tie in the Halloween theme effortlessly.'
