Tory Burch Aims To Make the Ordinary 'Sublime' for Fall 2024

Despite being 20 years into her business and brand, it somehow feels like Tory Burch is just getting started.

Since opening its first store in New York City in 2004, the Tory Burch brand has seen ebbs and flows — both in business and cultural significance. Though Burch's designs have consistently found their customer, from college girl-beloved tote bags to suburban mom-favored sandals, the brand entered a new era of adoration by the fashion community in the last few years — a period popularly referred to as the "Toryssaince."

The burst of new creative energy came in 2020 after the designer revamped her C-suite and redistributed her time to focus more on the design process. Since then, Burch has been on a roll, presenting consistently well-received collections. Spring 2024, in particular, pushed the "Toryssaince" even further, producing a slew of sought-after pieces like the Hoop dress worn by the likes of Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber and many more.

Burch may have spent the last few seasons one-upping herself, but with Fall 2024, she's no longer focused on creating something entirely game-changing. Instead, she's looking to build upon the highly praised foundation she laid last season.

"I wanted to continue that conversation from Spring," Burch told Fashionista backstage. "I started thinking about architecture and proportions and creating volume but without heaviness. I wanted things to have texture and shape but also be uber lightweight. And mixing the super feminine with masculinity."

Fall 2024 feels like an extension of last season thanks to similarly super-structured silhouettes with a dash of playfulness (last season it was the hoop shape, this season it's mini dresses with what Burch called "unraveling ruffles").

Those hyper-feminine, decorative elements tie into the overall theme of this season — "making the everyday sublime," Burch said. "Whether it's a lampshade or a shower cap or an old coat." The literal word also made its way onto tights and bags via a repeat pattern. "'Sublime' is a word that I love and I think is kind of underused," she mused.

The collection's first few looks perfectly illustrate this desire to elevate the ordinary, like a wool A-line midi dress and car coat covered in thin, beaded fringe that delicately swayed with each step the model took. "That wool is really an amazing fabric because it holds its structure, so you can create any shape with it. But it's not heavy," Burch explained. "I just don't like heavy clothing that you can't move in. I'm really interested in fabrics that stretch and have breathable properties. Like sport elements but interpreted in luxury."

Simple straight-cut pencil skirts also became "sublime" via decadently rich, glossy fabrics in vibrant ocean blues and marigold oranges. 3D-printed minaudières turned the average Tory Burch handbag into a sculptural work of art.

New techniques and an exciting new era aside, Burch insists that her main priority hasn't changed since she started her brand — leaving an impact on women. "It's always been about confidence...When you think about what clothing can do for you emotionally or how it can make you feel, (leaving an impact) is something that I really want to achieve," says Burch. "I love that women take our pieces and make it their own — they're incredible. I love women."
