Take a tour of this impressive grade II listed cottage in Cambridge
This Grade II listed cottage in Swaffham Bulbeck, Cambridge – which was originally mentioned in the Doomsday Book – has just entered the property market for £1.8 million.
Initially built in the 13th century, Lordship Cottage has quite the history. Not only was it mentioned in the Doomsday Book but it was originally built as a chapel in the time of the crusaders, with the twice Nobel prize winner Frederick Sanger (known for discovering insulin) living in the same village.
Over the years, the property has had many guises, including as a school. It even had its own moat at one point. The home has undergone a substantial renovation in recent years, including two cathedral-like extensions.
There is a perfect blend of old and new, with traditional parts of the chapel and exposed brick marrying with the recently modernised areas of the home. Taking over nine years to complete, the entire ground floor has been completely reconfigured to add a vast, vaulted sitting room and a sleek, state-of-the-art kitchen to the rear.
Entering through the reception hallway, there is a cloakroom, while a music room that could alternatively be used as a playroom or snug, is located directly off the hallway.
Taking a left at the front door will take you into a cosy dining room with its own inglenook fireplace, through to the impressive living room and its four metre high ceilings and gable end.
The second extension to the property – the stunning kitchen, which cost over £250,000 alone – is a master chef or baker’s dream. The kitchen also benefits from under-floor heating and leads to a wetroom at one end and a spacious utility or boot room at the other.
On the first floor you’ll find two of the four bedrooms, one of which has its own dressing room, as well as a family bathroom with a freestanding tub. Up another flight of stairs you’ll find bedrooms three and floor.
But what truly makes this space so special are the bi-fold doors allowing the space to be opened up even further, out into the landscaped gardens and a paved terrace with its own outdoor kitchen.
There’s also a shed for even more storage, as well as two detached outbuildings which are currently used as a home office and a games room. But you won’t feel all that separate from the main house thanks to the nifty intercom that connects you directly to the kitchen.
The village of Swaffham Bulbeck is located just six miles from Cambridge and around seven miles from the horse racing town of Newmarket. Just a short walk from the property, you’ll find a village store, the local primary school, an inn/restaurant and the village green. The nearby A14 motorway connects you further afield.
The property is currently on the market for £1.8 million via Cheffins.
