I Tried the Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls Hack, and It’s Perfect for Christmas
Holiday season = baking season. I don’t typically consider myself a baker, but this is the one time of year when I actually feel inspired to bake (because it’s festive, duh!).
And so I was very excited to stumble upon the simple-yet-adorable Christmas tree cinnamon roll hack on TikTok. I think it’s been making its way across the internet for a few years now (TikToker @jenglufling posted a version in December 2022, for example), but it’s getting some major TikTok and IG Reels love at the moment, and I decided to join in on the trend. I’m not the most artistic when it comes to decorating baked goods (you can ask any of my friends to confirm this), but I went into this with a lot of hope!
How to Make Christmas Tree Cinnamon Rolls
The beauty of this hack is that it’s both adorable and simple. The only ingredients and items you need to attempt it yourself are Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls (although I recommend the Pillsbury Grands! Cinnamon Rolls version — more on that later), skewers, and holiday sprinkles.
All you need to do once you pop open the tub of cinnamon roll dough (arguably the best part!) is unravel each cinnamon roll and form it into a tree shape by weaving it back and forth into a triangular shape. Then, stick a skewer through each one, and bake them following the instructions on your cinnamon roll tub. Once they’re out of the oven, add your icing (I put mine in a zip-top bag, with the corner snipped off, to pipe it) and an assortment of festive sprinkles.
My Honest Review of Christmas Tree Cinnamon Rolls
I ended up buying the Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls pack of eight, which meant the dough was super thin and very difficult to unravel. I would recommend getting the Grands! pack of five instead. I had to combine two rolls together for each tree to ensure there was enough dough to work with, and I had to shape the dough ribbons on my own. But somehow I persevered, and I was able to still make them look like trees (not 💩 emojis like some TikTokers posted, which I found very relatable).
I had originally wanted gold and silver sprinkle stars like the ones in Bonnie Barton (@flashesofstyle)’s Instagram video version, but used holiday sprinkles from Michaels instead. I like to think mine have more nostalgic vibes.
Overall, YUM. I mean, yes, they’re Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls — what’s not to love? The tree shape and holiday sprinkles make them so much fun, and each bite had me feeling like a kid again. I only wished I had put more icing on mine — I’ll go bolder next time.
I think this cinnamon roll hack is perfect for Christmas morning, and the skewers make them easy to eat on the move, like while everyone is opening and checking out their presents.
