Folks have long evangelized about green smoothies being a “miracle drink.” Whether or not you believe that, I think we can all agree that starting the day with some fruits and veggies is always a good idea. Recently Reese Witherspoon shared a green smoothie recipe on her Instagram that she drinks nearly every single day. She explains, “The first person who told me about this recipe was Kerry Washington. I sat next to her at an awards show and didn’t know her very well at the time, but I was like, ‘Your skin is so beautiful; what do you do?’” Washington replied that she drinks a green smoothie every day, which was enough to get The Morning Show actress hooked.

While I’m not focused on the beauty benefits of this beverage, one thing I’m always looking to load up on is fiber, and this recipe packs it — so I decided to try the smoothie to see if it was worth adding to my breakfast routine.

How to Make Reese Witherspoon’s Favorite Green Smoothie

To start, gather and prepare your smoothie ingredients by chopping one apple, one pear, one banana, a handful of spinach, two heads of romaine lettuce, and one lemon. Witherspoon recommends peeling the rind of the lemon for a smoother taste. Don’t forget to rinse the fruits and greens thoroughly under running water to make sure they’re clean. Once everything is prepped, layer the ingredients in your blender, adding about a half cup of coconut water as your liquid. Lastly, blend until all the components are combined and have a creamy consistency.

My Honest Review of Reese Witherspoon’s Favorite Green Smoothie

This green smoothie’s consistency is a bit gritty, as the only creamy ingredient is the banana. However, this beverage is highly customizable. The next day, I added a few scoops of ripe avocado and Greek yogurt, and the drink came out much smoother in texture.

What really drew me to this smoothie is its flavor. Unlike many green smoothies that can be overly bitter or earthy, this one has a natural sweetness from the bananas, pears, and apples. It’s also quick to make — breakfast was ready in under 10 minutes. I tested how it would hold up when stored in the fridge overnight, and it was just as delicious the next day. I definitely can see myself adding this to my breakfast roster a few times a week as a quick and easy way to get my fruits and veggies in.

Tips for Making Reese Witherspoon’s Favorite Green Smoothie

  • Swap the greens. While Witherspoon suggests using lettuce and spinach, you can really use any greens you have on hand, such as kale, chard, or arugula.

  • Make it creamy. For a smoother texture, use a creamy beverage like almond, coconut, or oat milk instead of coconut water. To make the smoothie thicker, you can also add a few scoops of ripe avocado or Greek yogurt.

  • Add sweetener. While the ripe bananas, apples, and pears deliver a pleasant flavor that masks the bitter spinach, you can add honey, agave, or maple syrup to this smoothie for more sweetness.
