During a tax reform speech in North Dakota today, President Trump called his daughter Ivanka on-stage to address the crowd. "Everyone loves Ivanka. Come up here, honey," the president said.

She had apparently asked her father if she could attend the trip. "She actually said, “Daddy, can I go with you?” Trump recalled. "I like that."

He also alluded to the fact that his daughter has been called a moderating influence. "Sometimes they'll say 'you know he can't be that bad a guy. Look at Ivanka,'" said Trump.

Ivanka, who is 35 years old and serves as one of the president's closest advisors in the West Wing, went on to address the audience.

"Hi North Dakota," she said. "We love this state, so it's always a pleasure to be back here. You treated us very, very well in November, and have continued, so we like sharing the love back. Thank you."

Ivanka has joined the president as part of her effort to pass a child tax credit, but it has not been easy to stay on message this week. Though she did not weigh in publicly on the president's repeal of the DACA protections for unauthorized immigrants who came to the US as children, protestors gathered outside the Washington D.C. home she shares with Jared Kushner for a candlelight vigil.

Ivanka's public appearance today also comes on the heels of news that the first daughter had dropped by an Oval Office meeting about disaster relief funding and the debt ceiling, and changed the conversation to talking about the child tax credit. According to a CNN source, she "entered the Oval Office to 'say hello' and the meeting careened off-topic."
