I tried Tu Clothing's new denim collection before it launches, these are the items worth buying

I don't expect these stylish and affordable pieces to stay in stock for long.

Sainsbury's own-brand fashion line, Tu Clothing, is one to watch this year. (Yahoo Life UK)

When I first caught a glimpse of Tu Clothing's brand-new denim collection, I was surprised at the level of expensive-looking, premium pieces I was seeing, to the point where I almost forgot I was looking at a supermarket own-brand fashion line. I immediately wanted to see for myself if the pieces would meet my expectations in person. So, I tried three of my favourite styles from the collection that I was convinced would sell out fast, and in a nutshell, I can't believe the quality you get for the price and how nice they look on.

The three pieces in question? A denim dress, pair of wide-leg turn-up jeans and button-front waistcoat. Three timeless styles that can be worn a variety of ways, with prices starting from as little as £18.

As affordable as a denim collection gets, this new drop from Sainsbury's is certainly not one you want to miss out on. And with a number of styles already running low in stock already, I don't suggest waiting around too long before adding items to your shopping basket. But don't fret, two out of the three styles I've featured haven't even landed online yet, so you've got plenty of time to set your reminders.

The star of the show, and a piece I don't see lasting online long once it drops, is this Denim Midi Dress, £30. Similar to best-selling styles from Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and more, but available for a fraction of the price.

This dress has a great feel to it, it features a long-line, midi design (although, more maxi on my 5'4 frame), has button fastenings down the centre, a flattering V-neckline and comfortable short sleeves. The denim itself isn't too stiff either, while the simple A-line shape is easy to move in, and a good fit for a range of body types and sizes. I also love the vertical seam detailing, which elevates the overall design of the dress.

I picked the dress up in a size 12, which fitted pretty well on my curvier figure. It didn't gape, nor bunch up, which is something I often battle with. The V-neckline also sits perfectly, and doesn't fall too low.

I can picture this dress looking great for a spring occasion, like a garden party or BBQ. The only design detail I think this dress could benefit from is pockets! But, for £30, I can't fault it and I'm sure it will fly off the shelves when it drops in March. While the denim dress I tried isn't available yet, Tu Clothing have just dropped this option online, which looks just as good and is only £28.

The Denim Midi Dress is launching in March, 2025.

Next, it was a denim waistcoat, something I wouldn't normally reach for, and, in all honesty, wasn't sure would suit me, especially as someone with a bigger bust (I'm a 32E). But to my surprise, I really love how it looks on. I paired it with some wide-leg elasticated trousers from M&S, and it looked super chic, making for a great office outfit for the warmer months.

The denim itself is also super soft, lightweight and feels good on. It's not restrictive in shape either; the arm holes are a good size, and the button fastenings lay flat over my chest.

Design-wise, I love the chic, almost boat neck shape, and lighter choice of denim. The fake pockets along with the darts across the bodice are a nice touch, while the upside-down V created by the button fastenings looks super contemporary.

A style that almost every major retailer has come out with, this particular design from Sainsbury's is a noticeably lower cost at just £18.

The Denim Waistcoat is launching in April, 2025.

Lastly, it was the in-demand Wide Leg Turn Up Jeans, which have already sold out once, and currently have a limited level of stock available (though, we're sure will get restocked soon).

Turn-up jeans are certainly a style I'm expecting to see a lot more of this year, with a range of iterations launching from lots of major retailers. These in particular are a lovely colour for spring, and are definitely something you could dress up or down depending on the occasion.

The high waist hits just at the right point and the turn-up element itself is also a nice design detail, zhushing up an otherwise quite basic pair of staple jeans.

My only bugbear with this pair of jeans was the sizing. Coming up quite small, I probably could have gone a size up. I got these in my usual size from Tu Clothing — a 12S — but admittedly, they came up quite tight around the waist area, presumably because this denim was a lot thicker compared to a previous pairs I have tried in the past. And in hindsight, I maybe could have gone for a regular length, too, so that the hem hits closer to the ground so definitely take this into account if you're going to order yourself a pair.

Add this pair of trendy turn-up jeans to your denim collection, complete with a high waistline and pockets.
