Now that the damp squib of January is back in full force and days spent lying horizontally in front of the TV with leftovers and tubs of Heroes to hand are a mere relic of a bygone time, it can be difficult knowing what to fill your time with.

One place that you may not have considered searching for easily-digestible, start-of-the-year cultural digestifs is the stable of shows that are not only nominated during the upcoming award season, but that convert their nominations to wins, too. A case in point: last night's Golden Globes, during which one of TV's sleeper hits of last year, Shōgun, took home all four of the awards it was nominated for. Looking for a series to lose yourself in? Look no further than the ten-episode series.

But don't just take it from last night's Golden Globes. The hit FX series was also the first non-English-language show to win best drama at the 2024 Academy Awards, while its stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai became the first Japanese actors ever to win Emmys. Its reign of 2024's award season also resulted in it winning 14 trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Shōgun, which is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, follows ‘the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance,’ the show's official synopsis reads. Essentially, it’s a deeper look into the power struggle between warring forces in 1600 feudal Japan.

Once you've binged all ten episodes, you can rejoice too at the fact that Shōgun has also recently been renewed for a second season. Despite originally being considered a limited series, its success and critical acclaim encouraged FX to consider making it a regular series in the autumn of 2024. The second season is currently in development.

Shōgun is available to watch on Disney+ now.
