Two Miami spots, one in Broward named among the best new restaurants in the South

Two upscale Miami restaurants and one busy neighborhood spot in Pembroke Pines have made Yelp’s Best New Restaurants in the South list for 2024.

Led by Chef Guillermo Eleicegui, formerly of the West Palm Beach restaurant Galley, Ossobuco in Wynwood was ranked no. 6 on the list of the top 25 restaurants. Recommended by the Michelin Guide earlier this year and offering a robust cocktail program, Ossobuco serves what it calls modern wood-fired cuisine, serving not only grilled meats and fish but also vegetables.

Yelp praised the grilled octopus with pickled onions and red chimichurri and the dry aged branzino a la parrilla with red chimichurri and called the Black Angus Tomahawk “exceptional.”

At least one ingredient in each dish passes through the wood fire, says marketing director Andres Patino, who believes the restaurant’s appeal comes from its flexibility.

“I think what people love about the restaurant is that we have small dishes to share, so everybody can have something different,” he said. “It’s not a regular restaurant with big portions.” He says Ossobucco has been doing well since it opened in the fall of 2023, despite the fact it’s located on Northwest 27th Street, which doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic.

Ossobuco plans to open a second restaurant in Coconut Grove sometime this fall, Patino said.

The other Miami restaurant on the list at no. 23 is the Peruvian spot Mayu Miami in the Brickell neighborhood. Yelp praised its unique menu items and ceviches as well as “elaborate cocktails and a sleek modern setting accented by Peruvian art.”

“Sumptuous Peruvian/Andean dishes are ready for their closeup at this buzzy new addition to the Brickell restaurant scene,” Yelp wrote. “This latest concept from the Aromas del Peru restaurant group features unique dishes like alpaca meat (served seared and garnished with berries and sweet potato puree) as well as classics like Lomo Saltado (filet mignon stir-fried with vegetables), creative ceviches, and maki rolls.”

As part of the annual promotion that begins Aug. 1, Mayu Miami is offering a Miami Spice menu for lunch and dinner through September.

One Broward restaurant made the list, Brandon’s Bistro in Pembroke Pines, which serves what Yelp calls “scrumptious Southern home cooking.” Majority-owned by former NBA player Brandon Knight, the restaurant draws crowds for its fried chicken, mac and cheese and catfish, which general manager Gabe Holmes told Yelp “is the most popular dish by a mile.”

The top new restaurant in the South, according to Yelp, is the Asian restaurant Noko in Nashville, Tennessee.

To make the list, Yelp identified restaurants that opened after Jan. 31, 2023, then ranked those spots using factors including total volume and ratings of reviews between Jan. 31 and May 1, 2024. Community managers then found the spots Yelp users were rating highly.
