It may be January and the air is filled with new year, new you chatter, but one thing that looks set to join us in 2025 from last year is the bob.

This classic short hairstyle isn’t going anywhere and with celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Zendaya and Selena Gomez all opting to ditch their long locks for this neck baring cut, we can only see it gaining even more popularity. Whereas last year’s bob had razor blunt edges or included a bang like the French bob, the 2025 update has a more relaxed edge to it. We're calling it the preppy bob and its being worn in style by Jenner in the campaign for her collaboration with Adanola.

This hairstyle is for those who don’t want to look like their hair has taken them ages to style as they are too busy enjoying life to waste time spending hours with an at-home air styler. This preppy bob reeks of the ultimate cool girl, with its undone finish. To find out if you would suit a preppy bob and how to style it at home we have spoke to some of the UK’s leading hair stylists.

What is a preppy bob?

What is a preppy bob exactly? According to Tom Smith - a hair stylist who has been dubbed ‘the hairvoyant’ thanks to his accuracy for spotting future hair trends - it is a blunt, chin-length style, which is worn in an understated manner.

'This style is designed to be worn with a relaxed kink or bend to it,' he says. It is the anecdote to the 90s blow out, as it celebrates nature texture and movement. It is also a style that can adapt to your own hair type, rather than work against it, which is what makes it look so effortless.

Global Creative Director at TONI&GUY and three-times British Hairdresser of theYear, Cos Sakkas believes this is the 2025 update to the boyfriend bob. 'The preppy bob is classic, clean cut and usually sits between the cheekbones and jawline. Kendall Jenner has the perfect face shape for this look, but it’s a really versatile haircut and suits most face shapes and hair textures,' he says. 'The key is in the cut – blunt through the ends and natural movement and texture encouraged throughout, or work smooth and sleek,' says Sakkas.

Who should try a preppy bob?

Deciding to go for broke with a bob is a big decision and Smith recommends only opting for this style if you are prepared to wear it in all its glory. 'This is a great option for those who prefer a structured shape,' says Smith. 'It is very much wash and wear.'

The preppy bob takes confidence, real or fake, as you can’t hide behind styling options and you’re very limited in being able to put it up in a ponytail. 'It works well with an oval, heart or square face which offers symmetry to the hairstyle,' says Sakkas. 'It can be worn with or without a fringe.'

How to style a preppy bob, depending on your hair type

Although all hair types can find a bob to suit them, the preppy bob works best for hair that is straight or slightly wavy. 'Those with curly hair or more textured hair can achieve the look by styling and blow drying the hair straight first,' says Smith.'It can be worn super straight or wavy,' says Sakkas. 'For a sleek, smooth finish reach for LABEL.M Anti- Frizz Smoothing Mask which nourishes and strengthens while smoothing frizz, then blow dry with the nozzle facing down the cuticle for natural shine.'

Before you whip out your tong, Smith recommends the best way to get this look is to go au naturel. 'On straight, naturally wavy hair, simply blow dry the hair with a flat paddle brush and tuck it behind your ears while it is still warm,' he says. 'Once it’s cold, a subtle kink will form in the face framing lengths, which will give this relaxed preppy vibe.'

To keep the texture, add a few sprays of Oribe Texturising Spray through the ends.

Which face shape suits a preppy bob?

This length can work on many face shapes, however Smith has this advice" 'If your face is squarer, you may prefer to have the length sit longer than the lowest part of your chin, which will help to balance a stronger jaw,' he says. 'If your face is wider or rounded, consider combining with a side parting rather than the middle parting.'

The blunt edge preppy bob

This chin length style looks great with slightly flicked ends. If you have straight hair that struggles to keep a kink then using a straightener to flick the edges out will achieve a similar finish.
