Um, Did Taylor Swift Literally *Wear* a ‘Midnights’ Easter Egg a Full Year Ago?
It’s an undisputed fact at this point that Taylor Swift is the queen of Easter eggs and cryptic clues, right? We all agree there? Good. Because honestly, if the following theory were about anyone other than Taylor, it would be completely absurd, but since this *is* Taylor “Queen of Secret Encoded Messages That Mean Something Else” Alison Swift, it could actually be a thing.
Search back in your mental Swiftie file to November 2021 (yes, almost a full damn year ago) to when Taylor was making the rounds promoting Red (Taylor’s Version) and her All Too Well short film and she stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers wearing *this* showstopping LBD:
The lewk immediately garnered comparisons to one of the most iconic dresses of all time: the black off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian Princess Diana wore to the Serpentine Gallery in London in June 1994. The event happened to be on the exact day that her estranged husband, then-Prince Charles, admitted in a televised interview that he’d had an affair with (his eventual second wife) Camilla Parker Bowles. The dress has henceforth been known colloquially as Diana’s “revenge dress,” for reasons that are obvious:
So what does all of this have to do with Taylor’s status as Queen of Cryptic Clues? Well, if you’ve been listening to Midnights on repeat since it dropped (and statistically speaking, you probably have, given all the streaming records the album has been breaking), then you’re probably already hearing “Vigilante Sh*t” in your head rn. If you haven’t already memorized all of the Midnights lyrics, the track makes several mentions of “dressing for revenge”:
They say looks can kill and I might try
I don’t dress for women
I don’t dress for men
Lately I’ve been dressing for revenge
And:
I don’t start sh*t, but I can tell you how it ends
Don’t get sad, get even
So on the weekends
I don’t dress for friends
Lately I’ve been dressing for revenge
And also:
Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife
And she looks so pretty
Driving in your Benz
Lately she’s been dressing for revenge
You get the idea. So now, some fans are living for the overlap/lowkey wondering if Taylor’s “revenge dress” look was a Midnights Easter egg all along.
The only person I think of when I hear Taylor Swift sing “I don't dress for women, I don't dress for men / Lately I've been dressing for revenge”

FWIW, Taylor officially denied the dress being a Diana reference during an interview with Access Hollywood back in 2021, saying, “I just liked the dress. It was a black dress I liked.”
But, like, maybe that quote was a secret encoded message that meant something else? Because that is a thing mom Taylor likes to do.
