My Unique House: Eco-friendly underground house will blow you away

Welcome to My Unique House, a weekly video series that profiles the most unconventional homes around the country and their equally interesting owners. Check back next week for another wild story, from a mermaid-inspired bungalow, an old airplane transformed into the ultimate bachelor pad and an entire house dedicated to cats.

From the front, passerbys wouldn't notice that Otis Johson's home is underground.

But in fact, the architect covered the back of his Clinton, Maryland house with dirt and grass in order to maintain a consistent temperature all year round. Constructed by connecting two domes with an underground tunnel, the building process of the home took Otis and his team seven months to complete.

Atop of the house sits a cupola, which allows light to flood the multi-story structure. Plus, with the use of windows at the front of the house and eight-foot ceilings, there's no way to feel like you're living underground!

"If you're going to live in a unique house, you better be prepared to meet new people," Johson said. "This house definitely draws curiosity seekers."
