The unlikely Christmas decorating trend set to be big this year

Despite the August heatwave, Pinterest's latest trend report shows that many of us are thinking ahead to Christmas and starting to plan our celebrations early. There's been a huge increase in festive searches, and the most notable decor trend and search term to have gained popularity is 'red Christmas trees'.

While it's undoubtedly an unusual Christmas trend (searches for 'red Christmas trees' have surged by 6.6x, say Pinterest), it isn't hugely surprising.

In the interior world, 2024 has been the year of the unexpected red theory – the decorating trend that suggests a small dose of red in any room can elevate a scheme in an instant. Now this theory is creeping into Christmas decor. Not for the faint-hearted, a red Christmas tree is definitely unexpected but it'll no doubt create a talking point over the festive period.

Red Christmas trees are perfect for a maximalist Christmas scheme. Take a 'more is more' approach and fill your space with bold colours and quirky, contemporary designs for a fun-filled and playful festive setting.

We know that red Christmas trees are fairly rare to buy (though we've spotted this artificial red spruce on Wayfair, or you could choose to spray paint one), and let's face it, they're not for everyone, so you can tap into the trend by going bold with red Christmas tree ornaments.

From glass baubles to felt designs and luxurious red velvet bows, adding a burst of red to your space can be done inexpensively – and it's an easy way of tapping into this season's hottest colour.

But it's not all about red Christmas trees. According to Pinterest, other trending Christmas searches centre (unsurprisingly) around food, with an increase in searches by 6x for 'Christmas baking,' 5.5x for 'Christmas cookies' and 3x for 'Christmas drinks'.

'It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas,' says Matt Siberry, head of home at Pinterest UK. 'It may be August, but people are heading to Pinterest to kickstart festive preparations. The home is definitely at the heart of festivities each year, so it’s no surprise that Pinterest users are heading to the platform for hosting inspiration, saving and shopping everything from Christmas food and drinks, to festive decorations.'
