Vintage Shop Reunites Prom Dress with Original Owner After She Spots It Decades Later in Chance Sighting (Exclusive)

An Arizona woman just happened to come across an Instagram video from a Chicago vintage shop when she spotted her 1990s prom dress

Sarah Azzouzi never quite knows what's going to show up in the "mystery boxes" she orders from a wholesale vintage raghouse, but a recent shipment yielded an opportunity to give new life to an Arizona woman's 1990's prom dress.

Azzouzi, the co-owner of Lost Girls Vintage in Chicago, posted a video on Instagram in which she unboxed the shipment, which was filled with prom dresses from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

As fate — or the Instagram algorithm — would have it, the video ended up on the Explore page of Ashley Dickson, a vintage-lover in Arizona, who immediately noticed that one of the dresses had come from her own closet.

"The craziest part is that she didn't even follow us [on Instagram], she just happened to see the video on her Explore page," Azzouzi tells PEOPLE. "And that's when she saw the dress. It's the same size, the same color — it's the same dress!"

Dickson sent the Chicago shop a message in which she included a screenshot of the dress, asking if she could purchase it for her own daughter to wear to prom.

"She said, 'You won't believe it, but I wore this dress to my prom,' and she sent a photo of herself wearing it," Azzouzi says. "So we of course had to sell it to her."

After cleaning the dress and ensuring it was in excellent condition, Azzouzi sent the copper, empire-waisted number to Arizona — where it's since been reunited with its owner and will eventually live a full-circle life when it's worn to prom by Dickson's daughter.

"My daughter is patiently waiting for her time to wear it," Dickson tells PEOPLE. "She is class of 2028 so we have 4 years! But this is going to be worth the wait."

As Azzouzi explains, Gen Z is turning to vintage items at prom time in a quest to look a little more different.

"Everyone wants to be unique on prom night," Azzouzi says. "They want to do the coming out and showing off and recording. That's such a special experience. Having a story behind the dress makes it even more special."
