Leave it to blush to breathe new life into your complexion. And thanks to all the recent viral blush trends, we're learning all the different ways to wield our brushes (and fingertips!) to create striking variations on flushed cheeks.

"Switching up blush is so fun because blush itself is constantly evolving. There are so many different shades, textures, finishes, and new technologies in blush to play with," says Tasha Reiko Brown, a Chanel makeup artist. "The cream textures are like finger painting; the gel textures add a fun, cooling wet swipe on the face; and powder textures are a perfect layering product. There is a blush type for every skill level and application preference. Blush can either elevate a look, add color harmony, or help your cheeks steal the show."

Whether you love to switch it up or are looking for a new go-to, there are endless opportunities to play. "I’m a firm believer that makeup should be fun and expressive with no rules whatsoever," says Tisha Thompson, makeup artist and founder of LYS Beauty "We all have different features, skin types, facial structures, etc., so it’s fun experimenting with different blush formulas and application methods to create a look that’s uniquely you."

Ahead, learn about five different viral blush trends and decide which one (if not all!) you want to add to your beauty rotation.

Doll Face Blush

"This is just the perfect doll face," says celebrity makeup artist Jenna Kristina, who works with Primark Beauty, of the look popularized by Sabrina Carpenter. "The look uses the perfect shade of pink, brighter than you would normally go for. It's placed directly on the apples of the cheeks and blends out on the outer edge." For Carpenter's radiant glow, Kristina says to pair the look with highlighter along the tops of the cheekbones.

Sunset Blush

"This trend blends different blush shades into a colorful mixture just like a sunset," says Jamie Greenberg, celebrity makeup artist and founder of JamieMakeup. We’ve seen that liquid blushes work well for this, as you can dot a few different shades close together on your cheek. I would recommend using three different shades of blush to achieve this and blending them all together, topping with your favorite highlighter to get that sunset glow."

Strawberry Shortcake Blush

"Strawberry Shortcake Blush is all about layering your blush and applying different formulas on top of one another to create both custom and lasting color," says Thompson of the look that Hailey Bieber put on the map. "You apply cream blush followed by a powder brush to amp up the color. As blush is often one of the first products to fade, this is a great technique for preserving the color."

Where you apply the blush is also key for this trend, adds Kristina. "It goes across the cheeks and over the bridge of the nose," she says. "Hailey does everything perfectly understated, so it's just a light flush of pink across the face."

Boyfriend Blush

"Boyfriend Blush is similar to a post-rugby/polo-playing, ruddy-like flush that you can mimic with the loose placement of a blush product," says Brown. "The placement is not too precise and bleeds slightly beyond the cheekbones and typical blush placement." She suggests buffing on a cream or gel blush in layers. "Take your time and apply the product with a large, loosely bristled brush. Buff the color onto your cheeks and straight back towards your hairline. Swipe any remaining color across the bridge of the nose, and then add a clear balm on top of the apples of the cheeks and nose."

Snatched Blush

Think of this like contouring with blush. "It's placed on the outer edges of your face, your outer cheekbones, past your brow bone, and up into your hairline," says Kristina, of creating the lifted effect. "It's a fiercer look. It's a lifted look—think of it as the girl who's really put together, has her Birkin bag, has her hair back in a snatched bun, and everything is in place."
