We love beauty tutorials as much as the next person, but a recent nail art lesson from vlogger, Franchesca Ramsey, did more than just offer some beauty tips.

Hooked off the recent announcement of this year’s Academy Award nominees, the New York City-based actress and comedian (better known as Chescaleigh) decided to create a nail tutorial inspired by the nominees.

“My first look is inspired by the incredible women nominated for best director,” she says, as the video is overlaid by images of Adam McKay, Tom McCarthy, George Miller, Lenny Abrahamson and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

“I’m using clear because clearly women just aren’t good directors. That’s why there’s only been one female winner in the Academy’s 88 year history.”

“I’m just going to layer it on real thick, kind of like the excuses that are used to justify why women are not being nominated in this category.”

She then goes on to address other big ticket awards including best actor, best supporting actor and best actress.

“Now this year I’m not going to use any black or brown hues because we don’t have any people of colour portraying slaves, or women of colour being abused, or playing stereotypical subservient roles.”

As you continue to move through the video, it’s pretty clear that Ramsay isn’t talking about nails but rather the number of inequalities represented by the nominations.

She layers on various shades of clear and beige to represent the white actors and actresses – and a few hints of gold for her winner predictions – all while unravelling the “safe” and “predictable” outlook for this year’s awards.

“If you were looking for diversity and representation this year, you are sorely out of luck.”

While some commenters have come forward claiming that the inequality is the fault of the industry and not the Academy, if Ramsay’s video has done anything, it’s at least sparked the conversation once again.
