As soon as I heard Mary Janes were making a comeback, part of me rejoiced — not only do I love the way that they look, but they’re actually practical, too. Part of me, however, cringed, when I remembered all the heel and toe trauma I’ve suffered in the name of sockless shoes. This next generation of flats isn’t built like the last, though, and one pair out of the dozens I’ve tried has risen to the top: the Vivaia Margot Mary Janes.

The under-the-radar sustainable shoe brand has been making waves lately thanks to its equally comfy and stylish shoe lineup. Katie Holmes is a fan of the brand, as are Selena Gomez and Emma Roberts. Its flexible ballet flats already have a following, and its heels are racking up reviews for being so comfortable, you can literally run in them.

The Margot Mary Jane, which is similar to the brand’s Margot 2.0 flats but with a strap, checked two big trend boxes for me: Mary Janes and flats. I love it when a single item encompasses multiple trends because it makes me feel like I’ve gotten extra credit. They’re stylish, but the level of comfort is where Vivaia really shines.

Vivaia’s Mary Janes have an updated square toe and an adjustable strap to help you get just the right fit. There’s a nice heel pad to prevent blisters and a very subtle heel to give you a bit of lift for the perfect foot position. They’re available in sizes 5 to 11 in six fall colors such as navy, forest green, and cherry red — aka one of the hottest colors of the season (and the shade I bought them in myself). Best of all, three of the colors — black, almond, and forest green —  come in wide size options.

The first thing I noticed was the fabric, which is soft and super flexible. It’s perfect for all the bending down and hovering I do with my toddler. (RIP to all my fancy shoes with creases in the toes.) The knit is made from six recycled plastic bottles and the shoes are machine washable, satisfying my need for sustainability and practicality. I ended up going a half-size down after reading the comments, and the fit was just right, with just enough room for my foot to breathe without sliding around. The strap adds another layer of security, and I love that I can adjust it, especially for days when my feet are swollen.

Overall, I’ve been super impressed with Vivaia’s Margot Mary Jane flats. My daughter spilled some unidentified substance on it and I was able to wash it right out in the washing machine. They’re the perfect shade of red, trendy without being something I’ll ditch next season. Best of all is, of course, the comfort. Take it from reviewers who said their feet didn’t hurt after walking around in them “for a whole weekend,” and that they even stayed comfy through eight-hour shifts.

The Vivaia Margot Mary Janes are a one-two punch of trend and comfort, but sizes are selling out quickly, so you’ll want to add a pair to your cart ASAP.
