Watch brave firefighters race against time to rescue helpless dog from icy waters

A German Shepherd escaped an icy fate before a few brave heroes saved its life.

Gardiner Fire Chief Rick Sieberg said the Maine fire station received a call at about 10:10 a.m. reporting a dog had fallen through the ice on Cobbossee Stream behind a home, according to ABC's WMTW 8.

The station reported that when the police officers and firefighters responded to the scene, the dog was about 50 to 60 feet offshore. Braving the danger, two firefighters in ice suits approached the scared pup with a rescue sled. They rushed to break the ice with paddles and pull the to dog to safety. After a few tense minutes, they lifted the furry friend out of the water where he joined people on shore calling him to safety.
