These Whatcom Thanksgiving outreach programs need help serving free community meals

Volunteers wearing protective gloves organize food drive donations.

Across Whatcom County, many families will gather for a big Thanksgiving dinner fit with turkey, mashed potatoes, casseroles and pumpkin pie. But across the county, local organizations and churches will also be working to provide free Thanksgiving meals for those who may need a place to go on the cherished holiday.

For those wanting to donate money or time, here’s a list of Whatcom County free Thanksgiving events that are in need of help next week:

Thanksgiving Community Dinner at Lighthouse Mission

Meal is served from noon to 2 p.m. at 1312 F St. in Bellingham on Thursday, Nov. 28.

All are welcome to enjoy a free meal.

Volunteers are still needed for the event. Visit the organization’s Volunteer Portal for more info.

Thanksgiving Baskets at Community Assistance Program

The Blaine Community Assistance Program is a nonprofit outreach from local churches that aim to provide community-based social services to Blaine, Birch Bay, Custer and Point Roberts.

For Thanksgiving, CAP provides ready-to-cook Thanksgiving dinners to families in need on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Pre-registration is required to receive a basket, and those needing a meal can call 360-393-9483 to join the wait list.

Donations are needed to purchase the food items, and can be made online or by mailing a check made out to CAP with “Thanksgiving Baskets” in the memo line to 508 G St., Blaine, WA 98230.

Editor’s note (Nov. 21): A previous version of this article included an event that is not happening in Bellingham. PeaceHealth’s Thanksgiving Basket Project only takes place in the organization’s Oregon network.
