Just moments after Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States, was sworn in for the second time, former Vice President Kamala Harris boarded a flight headed to California, her home state, to visit firefighters battling wildfires raging across Los Angeles and to help distribute food.

The move sets something of a tone for what Harris plans to do next. Harris — who ran against Trump in the 2024 presidential election — reportedly told her team that she wanted to meet with Californian first responders sooner, but a trip during her final days in office never quite materialised.

It is understood that a run for California governor in 2026, per The Hill, may well be on the horizon for Harris, while sources told Politico that she will need some time to sort out her personal affairs after spending two consecutive decades in office.

'There is a debate among her advisers right now about whether she should pursue any offices and if so, which ones?' one Harris ally who has spoken to the former Vice President in recent weeks told The Hill. It is believed that while she is keeping her options over, another run for president in 2028 isn't out of the question. 'Why wouldn’t she run again?' a longtime ally told the outlet.

There are also rumblings that Harris may be pursuing an opportunity to write a book, according to six people familiar with internal discussions about her future. Since she conceded to Trump in November, Harris has said little publicly about her 107-day sprint to run for president, making a book deal the perfect moment to finally enable her to put her experience of the race into her own words.
