Emily In Paris is back for its long-awaited fourth season, hooray! And while that inevitably means more drama, more love triangles, and more musical numbers (we cannot wait to see Mindy take on Eurovision, tbh), what we’re *most* excited about is the fashion.

Because if the hit Netflix series can be relied upon for one thing, it’s statement-making ensembles courtesy of the show's leading ladies, Emily Cooper, Mindy Chen and Camille. Portrayed respectively by Lily Collins, Ashley Park and Camille Razat.

And for season four, the clothing is bigger and better than ever encompassing 1000 costumes, 2500 pairs of shoes (including the character's first pair of flats!) and 350 bags. All coordinated as far as a year in advance by costume designer, Marylin Fitoussi who previously worked alongside famed costume designer Patricia Field – whose credits include Sex and the City, Ugly Betty and The Devil Wears Prada – on seasons one and two, before taking the reigns solo for season three and now season four.

Marylin tells Cosmopolitan UK about the reflective process of bringing the characters’ wardrobes to life. “We never have a script before shooting [begins]... so I imagine situations and make a library of looks. We prepare 20 looks for office, 10 for parties,” and so on, she says. “Once the character of Emily is approved by Darren [Star, the show’s creator], I can [move onto] looks for the other characters so that everybody looks great together.”

Without knowing what the script will call for in each scene, it does mean some outfits never make their way onto screen. “On season three, we had a beautiful Haute Couture dress that we said we will keep for a big event, a big party, and this big party never happened, so we couldn't [include] the dress.” As a result, Marylin revealed her mantra this season was to prioritise the best outfits. “If a bigger party happens, we will find another bigger and more beautiful dress.”

So, what can audiences and fashion girlies alike expect from season four? While Emily’s trademark romanticisim and eclectic style remains, it's been reimagined in new, sharper silhouettes. One of Marylin’s favourite outfits from across the series is a black vinyl Balmain look adorned with supersized patent flowers that the character wears to a party for this reason. “It’s much more sexy and sensual, and we are not used to seeing her like that,” she explains.

Marylin intentionally reflects Emily’s character arcs through her wardrobe evolution, with plenty of Easter Eggs for fans to look out for too. A butterfly bag that she carries during the most romantic interaction of the season is a physical metaphor for the feeling of having butterflies in your stomach. There’s a gingham and plaid outfit worn in the final episode that’s a call back to a similar outfit Emily wore in season one. “I’m not sure it’s very obvious, but we said, ‘Okay, let’s see if people see that,’” Marylin confesses, reluctant to give too much away. Can you spot it?

As with the seasons before, Marylin uses the costumes to pay tribute to sources of inspiration. Look out for multiple nods to Audrey Hepburn in Emily’s black and white striped catsuit worn to a themed ball that references My Fair Lady, while a fur hat and coat ensemble honours the Hollywood icon's 1966 film, Charade. “We also did a little tribute to Pretty Woman when she's – oh, I can’t tell you,” Marylin starts, before quickly cutting herself off.

Emily's party dress

Seemingly possessing the perfect party dress for any and every occasion, Emily’s cream and pink floral mini taps into her trademark OTT aesthetic with voluminous floral cuffs, collars and hems. This Sister Jane iteration features an almost identical print with the brand sharing Emily's affinity for puff sleeves and bows.

When she’s not wearing neon bright colours, Emily instead often opts for eye-catching prints – minimalist she is not! Case in point: this V-neck blouse decorated with a retro pattern and wide sleeves, paired with green high-waist tailored shorts.

Emily's striped shirt and knit

A striped button-down shirt and layered knit is a workwear go-to for many, but few would pattern clash as brazenly as Emily does in her blue iteration (peep the matching tie), worn with a brown checked cardigan over the top. To create a similar look, we love the idea of adding a leopard print sweater vest over the top. After all, leopard is a neutral.

Dress the part of boardroom boss babe and Sylvie (or your personal equivalent) will have to listen to you. Take a leaf out of Emily’s style play book and opt for traditional, tailored cuts in an on-trend bright blue cobalt hue. Bonus points if you too pair your tailored trews with cowboy boots à la Emily’s black Rabanne Chelsea boots and Pierre Hardy Alpha leather crossbody bag for a cool girl twist.

Even if Emily’s Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini green floral satin co-ord set wasn't sold out, it would be well out of our price range. Same goes for the pink Jacquemus La Maille ribbed shrug cardigan she layered over the top. Luckily, Urban Outfitters have come through with their own pink cropped cardi, while Reformation's Overland Silk Top has a very similar composition of green satin and delicate floral print. Accessorise with Emily's exact Kate Spade tote – now on sale!

You can just catch sight of Emily peeking in at the edge of this shot that introduces new cast member, Eugenio Franceschini as Marcello. And, as distracted as we may have been by new eye candy, nothing could prevent us from taking note of Emily’s pink and brown checked trench coat and matching bucket hat combo, confirmed to be from London-based womenswear brand Lisou. So cute!

The bucket hat in that exact colourway isn’t available to shop, but there are plenty of other prints to take your fancy.
