Why I Ditched My Ultimate Garden Cart (Yes, I Still Miss It)

Gardening can require a lot of hauling. Shovels, spades, and rakes need to be moved from garden bed to garden bed. Garden waste, like dead branches and leaves, needs to be carted to the compost. To make these tasks easier, some type of garden cart or bag is a must.

My Favorite: The Ultimate Garden Cart by Smart Carts

Many people love a wheelbarrow, but I find them tippy and unable to hold enough material. My favorite garden cart is the Ultimate Garden Cart by Smart Carts. There are so many things I love about it:

  • The size: The overall length of the cart is 48 inches, so it easily accommodates larger garden tools. Plus, it can hold a lot of material—be it soil, compost, or yard waste—in one go.

  • The material: The cart is made with heavy-duty HDPE, so it won’t rot like a wooden cart could. Plus, it has aluminum components that won’t rust. While it’s a little pricey, it will last for years.

  • Ease of use: Whether you want to push or pull the cart, the large wheels make moving it around the garden, whether over rocks or along paths, super easy.

  • Flat storage: While the cart is large, it can be stored flat on its end, so it can tuck nicely in a garden shed or up against the side of the house.

What’s Practical for the Yard I Have Now: Collapsible Gardening Bag by Fiskars

Now the caveat—while I truly love the Ultimate Garden Cart, my yard is very small with many stairs, so it just isn’t practical for me (I have had one in the past and miss it all spring, summer, and fall). Instead, I use a collapsible garden bag. Because it collapses flat, it easily fits in my small garden bin. And at 26 inches tall, I can shove larger tools in there to carry them around. The only downside—and maybe it's because I'm a little lazy—but I often end up dragging the bag versus picking it up and carrying it, so after a few years the bottom wears out and gets holes in it.
