Why Is King Charles' Diagnosis Public While Kate Middleton's Is Private? Here's What We Know

As you attempt to keep up with the royal family and their health status (on top of your own, of course), you might be wondering why the palace hasn't provided much intel on Kate Middleton's recovery as opposed to King Charles'.

On January 17, Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales had a "planned abdominal surgery" the previous day. Per the statement, Kate is expected to be in the hospital for "ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery." The palace also revealed that she's withholding from making any public appearances until after Easter.

Just 2 hours after Kensington Palace's announcement, Buckingham Palace released a statement with news that Charles would be undergoing surgery for an enlarged prostate. According to the announcement, he shared that he would have the procedure to "inspire other men to consult their doctors."

The King's surgery is scheduled for this week, which means his public engagements will also be postponed temporarily. A palace insider told People that there's a specific reason behind Charles' diagnosis being disclosed ahead of his procedure rather than after it. "It was sensible to be more open about it, as otherwise, people might have thought the worst," the source revealed.

As for Kate, Kensington Palace stated that they would only be sharing important updates about her health status to avoid alarming the public. While the nature of her condition hasn't been disclosed, the palace reassured the public that it's not related to cancer. She chose to keep her diagnosis private because of her "desire to maintain as much normality" for her kids, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte.
