Why Selena Gomez Skipped the 2022 MTV VMAs

The MTV VMAs will have to wait at least one more year for Selena Gomez's return. The singer did not attend this year's ceremony for a very understandable reason: She has no nominations. Gomez was last photographed in Malibu last Sunday, having lunch with Interscope Records CEO John Janick at Nobu. Her West Coast sighting is quite far from the ceremony tonight in Newark, New Jersey, right outside of New York City.

Gomez did release a new collaboration with Rema on Friday, joining the artist on the “Calm Down” remix. She has also shared footage of herself in the recording studio, teasing that new music is still coming in addition to all her acting projects—and that fans would get new songs from her sometime this year.

Gomez addressed her stance on her music career in an interview with ELLE last September. “I don’t think I’ll ever quit making music,” she said, admitting that she does still feel like she's trying to prove herself there. “I’m not saying I want a Grammy. I just feel like I’m doing the best I can, and it’s all about me. Sometimes, that can really get to me.” Music is more personal than acting, she added: “You’re pouring yourself out.”

While Gomez doesn't have any nods this year, she does have someone very close to her that is heavily-nominated. Gomez's longtime friend Taylor Swift is up for four awards at the ceremony, including Video of the Year for the 10-minute edition of “All Too Well.” Swift directed and appeared in the music video. Gomez last gave fans a peek into their friendship last month on her 30th birthday.
